CLEVELAND – The Case Western Reserve University softball team fell twice on Sunday to No. 13 nationally ranked Trine University (Ind.) under the dome of Cleveland State University's Krenzler Field.

The Spartans (10-8) lost to the Thunder (14-1) by scores of 5-0 and 10-7. The doubleheader was moved indoors to Krenzler Field due to inclement weather.

For the day, senior catcher Amy Taylor (Brier, Wash./Inglemoor) was 4-for-6 with two RBI.

In game one, the Thunder picked up a run in the top of the first with an RBI single by Rachel Harris. The game's next scoring threat didn't come until the top of the fourth, and that was foiled when Taylor picked off a Trine runner at second. With two out and two runners on in the next inning, Trine added to its advantage with back-to-back RBI singles from Harris and Leah Hall. Another two runs scored in the top of the sixth thanks to an RBI triple by Carly Searles followed by an RBI double from Kaitlyn Clark.

Pitcher Bree Fuller (7-1) limited the Spartans to just five hits with seven strikeouts and no walks. Harris finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI.

Freshman Annie Wennerberg (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) battled through 5 2/3 innings for the Spartans and allowed five earned runs for her first loss as a collegian (6-1 overall). Sophomore Rebecca Molnar (Independence, Ohio/Independence) threw 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Taylor was 2-for-3 at the plate.

In game two, the Spartans got on the board first when junior designated player Gena Roberts (Miami, Fla./Palmer-Trinity) doubled over the left fielder's head to plate Taylor. Trine came right back in the next inning and grabbed a 2-1 lead when Catherine Porter drove a two-run homer to left. In the third, two more solo homers by Clark and Harris increased the Thunder advantage to 4-1.

Taylor came through again at the plate in the bottom of the third with a single that scored sophomore centerfielder Rachel Komar (Chesterland, Ohio/West Geauga), but Trine covered that run in the fourth with a double-steal that scored Searles.

An inning later, Trine created some breathing room with four runs on three hits to make the score 9-2. Undaunted, the Spartans answered with four in their half of the frame. Taylor brought home one with a sacrifice fly, and senior shortstop Makenzie Lein (Petersburg, Mich./Ida) ripped a three-run homer to left.

The teams traded runs in the sixth, as Trine scored one on a balk and the Spartans got one more of their own when Wennerberg drilled a solo homer to right center.

On the mound, junior Rebecca Taylor (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) pitched the first 2 2/3 innings in a losing effort, to fall to 2-6.

Offensively, Amy Taylor went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run. Wennerberg also finished 2-for-3 with the solo homer.

For Trine, Fuller (8-1) was once again the winner with three strikeouts in seven innings. At the plate, Clark was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Porter finished 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI.

The Spartans are scheduled to host Westminster College (Pa.) this Wednesday, March 26 for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader at Mather Park. Further schedule changes remain a possibility with more inclement weather in the forecast.
