ATLANTA – Senior shortstop Makenzie Lein (Petersburg, Mich./Ida) went a combined 3-for-6 with a homerun and four RBI as the Case Western Reserve University softball team split a pair of games to open the 2014 season at the 3 N 2 Classic hosted by Emory University at EU Softball Field. The Spartans defeated Centre College (Ky.), 18-2, in five innings in game one, but fell to No. 12 nationally ranked Emory in game two, 7-4.
The Spartans (1-1) conclude the weekend on Sunday versus Emory at 10:00 a.m. and Centre at 12:00 p.m.
Down 2-0 versus Centre (0-1), the Spartans exploded for eight runs in the third inning. Sophomore third baseman Rachel Komar (Chesterland, Ohio/West Geauga) got the ball rolling with a three-run triple, and Lein highlighted the frame with a three-run homer – her first "long ball" since April of 2012. In the fifth, the Spartans tacked on four more for good measure.
On the mound, Taylor pitched all five innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits with one walk and nine strikeouts.

Versus undefeated Emory (9-0), the Spartans erased a three-run deficit with three runs in the top of the sixth. Amy Taylor provided the key hit with a two-run single that knotted the score at 4-4. However, the Eagles regained control with three of their own in the bottom of the frame as Claire Bailey and Hannah Sendel each provided RBI hits.
Sophomore Marisa Kohley (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) took the loss on the mound with three runs allowed in 2 1/3 innings of relief. Classmate Rebecca Molnar (Independence, Ohio/Independence) started the game and lasted 3 2/3 innings.
