Spartan Softball Looks to Stay Hot versus Hiram on Friday; Watch it Live

CLEVELAND – With wins in five straight and nine out of 10, the Case Western Reserve University softball team continues a season-long eight-game home stand on Friday, April 19 versus Hiram College at 3:30 p.m. at Mather Park.


Spartan Notes

Playing their best ball of the season, the Spartans (18-13) have moved to a season-high five games above the .500 mark.

In a sweep of the University of Mount Union on Monday, sophomore pitcher Rebecca Taylor (14-10) recorded her 14th complete game and struck out nine. Taylor now has 20 strikeouts versus just two earned runs in her last 14 innings and leads the University Athletic Association with 137 strikeouts. For her career, the second-year Spartan already ranks second in school history in strikeouts (316), tied for third in shutouts (6), fourth in wins (34) and fifth in complete games (39).

Freshman third baseman Rachel Komar, the reigning UAA Hitter of the Week, is batting .511 (24-for-47) with 13 runs scored, a homer and six runs batted-in during her current 12-game hitting streak. Sophomore catcher Amy Taylor and sophomore rightfielder Gena Roberts have posted respective averages of .538 and .480 during the last dozen contests. Sophomore second baseman Molly O'Brien enters play this weekend just one stolen base shy of breaking 2011 graduate Beth Andrasik's program career record of 34.

Terrier Notes

Representatives of the North Coast Athletic Conference, the Terriers (10-18) snapped a three-game losing skid with a doubleheader sweep of Ohio Wesleyan University on Wednesday. Junior catcher Jessica Bolanz homered in each end of the twinbill, and freshman pitcher Megan Garland pitched two complete games with a shutout in the opener.

For the season, Bolanz leads the Terriers in batting average (.463), homers (7), RBI (30), hits (38), doubles (13), triples (2) and walks (15). Bolanz is second in the NCAC in average and homeruns. Sophomore outfielder Miranda Wright and junior utility player Sarah Loyer are second and third on the club, respectively, with averages of .349 and .346. Wright also has a pair of homeruns and 15 RBI. Sophomore second baseman Angela Perella checks in just under the .300 mark at .299 but is second on the squad with four homers and 16 RBI.

On the mound, Garland (8-7) leads the Terriers in innings (100.0), ERA (4.90) and strikeouts (54).
