Spartan Softball Opens Season-Long Home Stand versus Mount Union on Monday; Watch it Live

CLEVELAND – The Case Western Reserve University softball team looks to continue its winning ways with the opening doubleheader of a season-long eight-game home stand on Monday, April 15 versus the University of Mount Union at 3:45 p.m. at Mather Park.

Spartan Notes

The Spartans (16-13) have won seven of their last eight games to move a season-high three games above the .500 mark. This past weekend, the team was 3-1 with a doubleheader split at John Carroll University on Friday and a sweep of Oberlin College on Saturday. In the four games, freshman third baseman Rachel Komar hit a whopping .600 (9-of-15) with a triple, a homerun, four runs batted-in and a stolen base. In the twinbill at Oberlin, sophomore second baseman Molly O'Brien recorded three steals to tie 2011 graduate Beth Andrasik's program career record of 34.

During the last eight games, the Spartans are batting .368 as a team with Komar leading the way at .516. Junior catcher Amy Taylor is hitting .500 during the stretch with a homer and 11 RBI, while sophomore rightfielder Gena Roberts has started to regain her form with a .360 average, a homerun and nine RBI.

On the mound, sophomore Rebecca Taylor leads the University Athletic Association with 128 strikeouts and ranks second with 123 innings pitched. For her career, the second-year Spartan already ranks second in school history in strikeouts (309), tied for third in shutouts (6), fourth in wins (33) and fifth in complete games (38).

Purple Raider Notes

Representatives of the Ohio Athletic Conference, the Purple Raiders (16-7) had won six-of-eight before a home doubleheader sweep at the hands of Ohio Northern University this past Saturday.

The Raiders are led by junior Brittney Papp with a .421 batting average this season. Senior Kristen Gomes boasts a .411 average to go along with team highs of 30 hits, 20 runs scored, 16 RBI and four homeruns. Senior Alex Mayo is next with a .322 average, 13 runs, 19 hits and seven RBI. With a staff ERA of 2.29, the Raiders are led by senior Rachel McAninch with a 9-5 record, 1.88 ERA and 99 strikeouts in 93.0 innings pitched. Sophomore Michelle Stiltner follows with a record of 6-1 and 24 strike outs in 49.2 innings.

Last season, the Raiders swept the Spartans in Alliance by scores of 7-0 and 11-5.
