TIFFIN, Ohio – Junior catcher Amy Taylor (Brier, Wash./Inglemoor) went a combined 5-for-9 with three runs batted-in, and the Case Western Reserve University softball team completed a 4-0 weekend with a doubleheader sweep of Heidelberg University on Sunday afternoon at Jocko Huffman Field. The Spartans utilized late offense in each game to win by scores of 6-4 and 11-6 in eight innings.

With four wins in a row, the Spartans (13-12) jump above the .500 mark for the first time since early March and will continue a six-game road trip at local-rival John Carroll University on Thursday, April 11 at 3:30 p.m.

The two losses drop the Student Princes to 10-12.

In game one, both teams scored once in the first before the Spartans grabbed a 2-1 lead in the second on an RBI single by sophomore leftfielder Ashley Parello (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township). Heidelberg then moved ahead 4-2 with three runs in the third as Lisa Simmons hit an RBI double, and Mikaela Mitsch blasted a two-run homer. Case cut one off its deficit in the following inning thanks to an RBI single by freshman outfielder Kristen Klemmer (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park), but the Student Princes maintained a one-run advantage until the final inning.

In the seventh, the Spartans loaded the bases with two outs before Taylor provided a clutch two-run single down the left field line. Sophomore rightfielder Gena Roberts (Miami, Fla./Palmer-Trinity) capped the rally one batter later with an RBI double.

Sophomore pitcher Rebecca Taylor (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) threw all seven innings for her 12th complete game of the season. The right-hander allowed four earned runs on six hits while striking out seven.

Nicole Gabriele (2-4) was the losing pitcher for Heidelberg with five of the six Spartan runs earned on 12 hits.

For the game, Amy Taylor was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Sophomore second baseman Molly O'Brien (Northbrook, Ill./Loyola) also went 3-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored.

In game two, the Student Princes took advantage of a first inning error to score a pair of runs. The Spartans got one back in the second via a Klemmer RBI triple and then tied the score in the third when freshman first baseman Erin Dreger (Alliance, Ohio/Alliance) drove O'Brien home with a groundout.

Case took the lead in the fifth thanks to two more Heidelberg errors, but the hosts responded with three in the sixth when Mitsch belted a three-run homer to left. Undaunted, the Spartans moved back in front in the seventh when Parello hit a two-run double to score Dreger and Amy Taylor.

Following suit, Heidelberg tied the game in its half of the seventh thanks to a Bri Sinden RBI single with two outs.

In extra innings, the Spartans blew the game open with five runs on four hits and an error as Dreger drove in a pair with a single, and Roberts singled home a pair.

Freshman pitcher Marisa Kohley (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) earned her first collegiate victory with two innings of one-run relief. Rebecca Taylor threw a scoreless eighth for her first save.

At the plate, freshman third baseman Rachel Komar (Chesterland, Ohio/West Geauga) was 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Amy Taylor was 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI, while Dreger drove in a season-high four runs.

Ali Sayre threw 5.1 innings of relief for Heidelberg although only three of the 10 runs she allowed were earned.
