Spartan Softball Opens Home Schedule versus Denison on Saturday; Watch it Live

CLEVELAND – The Case Western Reserve University softball team will finally open the home portion of the 2013 schedule this Saturday, April 6 with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader versus Denison University at Mather Park. The team has seen four home doubleheaders postponed over the past two weeks due to inclement weather.

Spartan Notes

The Spartans (9-12) look to snap a three-game losing skid after being swept by scores of 2-0 and 10-7 at Otterbein University on Wednesday, April 3. In game two of the doubleheader, sophomore second baseman Molly O'Brien went 3-for-5 with her first homerun of the season and a career high-tying three runs batted-in. O'Brien leads the team in batting average (.412), hits (28), runs (19) and stolen bases (14) this spring, and she is now just four steals shy of tying the school career record of 34 held by current assistant coach and 2011 graduate Beth Andrasik.

A pair of Spartan freshmen have made significant contributions at the plate so far this season as first baseman Erin Dreger and third baseman Rachel Komar have batted .371 and .344, respectively. Dreger also has a homer, 10 RBI and five walks, while Komar has homered once and stole three bases.

On the mound, sophomore Rebecca Taylor leads the University Athletic Association with 97 strikeouts and ranks second with 94 innings pitched. For her career, the second-year Spartan already ranks third in school history in strikeouts (278), tied for third in shutouts (6), fourth in wins (29) and fifth in complete games (35).

Big Red Notes

Represenatives of the North Coast Athletic Conference, the Big Red (11-5) has won eight of its last 10, including three in a row following a doubleheader sweep of Oberlin College this past Tuesday, April 2.

Senior infielder Jess Roberston leads the team with an impressive .391 batting average to go along with two homeruns and 17 RBI. Junior infielder Rachel Laughlin follows with a .356 average, 11 runs scored, two homeruns and nine RBI. Sophomore infielder Julie Rooney bats .352 with a team-high 19 hits and 11 runs, while junior catcher Meghan Edwards is a .296 hitter with a team-best 13 runs scored. On the mound, junior Rebecca Dyer is 5-3 with a 1.91 ERA and 71 strikeouts in 55 innings while junior Kelsey Hager is 6-2 with a 2.42 ERA and 32 strikeouts in 52 innings. Dyer has also thrown eight complete games and a pair of shutouts.

Head Coach Tiffany Ozbun became the program's all-time wins leader with 146 when the team defeated Allegheny College (Pa.) by a score of 8-5 on March 30.

The Spartans swept the Big Red by scores of 3-0 and 3-1 in Granville last season, but Denison won the previous eight meetings dating back to 2008.
