ALTMAONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – Sophomore leftfielder Ashley Parello (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) hit her first collegiate home run and drove in a career-high four runs as the Case Western Reserve University softball team won its second game of the 2013 University Athletic Association Championship by a score of 10-2 in six innings versus Brandeis University (Mass.) on Wednesday at Seminole Field.
The Spartans (6-4, 2-1 UAA), who play eight games in five days at the Seminole Complex, are back in action with a doubleheader tomorrow versus No. 2 nationally-ranked Emory University (Ga.) at 10:00 a.m. and No. 24 University of Washington-St. Louis at 12:30 p.m.
Parello was a career-best 3-for-4 with her homer in the second inning and a two-run double that invoked the "mercy rule" in the sixth.
In addition, sophomore Gena Roberts (Miami, Fla./Palmer-Trinity) continued her tear with her third homer in four games. Over the last six contests, Roberts has batted .476 (10-for-21) with four doubles, a triple, six runs scored and 15 runs batted-in.
Sophomore pitcher Rebecca Taylor (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) improved to 6-3 for the season with a solid day on the mound. In six innings, she allowed two earned runs on five hits while striking out seven. She also drove in a pair during a five-run sixth inning that put the game out of reach.
Brandeis (5-4, 1-3 UAA) opened the score in the top of the first. Amanda Genovese reached via a bunt single then advanced to third on two-consecutive steals. Anya Kamber ripped a single down the left field line to plate Genovese and put the Judges on top.
During the bottom of the frame, Case took a two-run advantage with three runs on five hits and an error. Sophomore second basemen Molly O'Brien (Northbrook, Ill./Loyola) led off with a single and eventually came around to score on a throwing error, while Roberts blasted a two-run homer that plated freshman first basemen Erin Dreger (Alliance, Ohio/Alliance).
Case added a run during the second when Parello led off with her first career long-ball to right field, while Brandeis countered with a single score in the fourth after an RBI bunt by Anya Kamber.
After another run in the fifth courtesy of a Parello two-out, RBI single, the Spartans put the game away with five in the bottom of the sixth.
With the bases loaded, Roberts hit a sacrifice fly to right that drove O'Brien home before Taylor plated Dreger and freshman third baseman Rachel Komar (Chesterland, Ohio/West Geauga) with a single. The clinching runs came when Parello hit a double down the left field line to score junior shortstop Makenzie Lein (Petersburg, Mich./Ida) and junior outfielder Katherine Seo (Salt Lake City, Utah/Olympus).
Overall, the Spartans posted a season-high 17 hits and batted .500 (6-of-12) with runners in scoring position.
Melissa Nolan (1-2) lasted only an inning and took the loss on the mound for Brandeis.
