CLERMONT, Fla. – Behind two dominant outings from sophomore pitcher Rebecca Taylor (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) and a huge day at the plate for sophomore right fielder Gena Roberts (Miami, Fla./Palmer-Trinity), the Case Western Reserve University softball team earned a pair of victories to conclude play at the National Training Center Games on Saturday evening. The Spartans defeated Salve Regina University (R.I.), 5-0, and followed with a 6-0 blanking of St. Lawrence University (N.Y.).
Case (4-3) moves above the .500 mark for the first time this season and will now open the University Athletic Association Championship on Tuesday, March 12 versus No. 25 nationally-ranked Washington University-St. Louis at 10:00 a.m. in Altamonte Springs.
Against Salve Regina, Taylor hurled the first five innings with eight strikeouts. She was relieved by freshman Rebecca Molnar (Independence, Ohio/Independence), who tossed the final two innings with a pair of punchouts.
Offensively, Roberts was 2-for-3 with a double, triple and a run batted- in, while Taylor aided her own cause with a 2-for-3 performance.
Versus St. Lawrence, Taylor was lights out again with a complete-game four-hitter. In seven innings, the second-year Spartan posted her third double-digit strikeout performance for the spring with 11.
At the plate, Roberts blasted a two-run homerun in the fifth inning, her eighth career four-bagger, while freshman infielder Rachel Komar (Chesterland, Ohio/West Geauga) also provided a spark in the fifth via a two-run single. Taylor once again helped herself at the plate going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
