CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Case Western Reserve University softball team split a Seniors' Day doubleheader with Adrian College (Mich.) on Sunday at Mather Park. The Spartans rallied with five runs in the sixth inning to win game one, 7-5, but the Bulldogs came back to take game two, 11-2 in five innings.
With the split, the Spartans move to 21-14 overall. The 21 victories this season tie for the fourth-most in program history. Adrian goes to 15-12 for the season.
Prior to the doubleheader, CWRU honored its three softball senior student-athletes who conclude their careers as Spartans this spring -- third baseman Kaeleen Boden (Strongsville, Ohio/Holy Name), first baseman/designated player Lauren Wolz (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) and catcher/designated player Ianna Wasser (Warwick, R.I./Toll Gate).
In game one, both sides went scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when Adrian's Brooke Stewart ripped a solo homerun to left center. The Bulldogs added another tally later in the inning following a single, two sac bunts and a fielder's choice, but freshman pitcher Rebecca Taylor (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) was able to escape a bases-loaded jam with a strikeout.
In the bottom of the inning, the Spartans got on the board when sophomore catcher Amy Taylor (Brier, Wash./Inglemoor) dropped a "squeeze" bunt down the first base line, plating freshman rightfielder Gena Roberts (Miami, Fla./Palmer-Trinity) and loading the bases with no out. However, a line-out and two strikeouts later, Adrian escaped with no further damage.
In the next inning, the momentum turned when Amy Taylor picked off an Adrian runner at second to end of the top of the frame. In Case's next at-bat, freshman second baseman Molly O'Brien (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) led off with a double then came around to score on a single up the middle by Roberts.
Adrian would briefly regain the lead with three runs in the top of the sixth as Leah Ostrowski provided a key pinch-hit, two-run double. However, the Spartans answered in the bottom of the inning as sophomore shortstop Makenzie Lein (Petersburg, Mich./Ida) hit a clutch two-out, two-run single before Roberts followed with the game-winning three-run homer to left.
For the game, Roberts was 3-for-4 with her sixth homer of the year and four runs batted-in. Lein was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
On the mound, Rebecca Taylor improved to 15-10 for the season with her 19th complete game. In seven innings, she allowed five earned runs while striking out six. With her 15 wins and 151 strikeouts this season, the rookie hurler is now just three victories and one K shy of breaking school records.
For Adrian, Stewart was 3-for-4 with the homer, while Kelly Eberhardt took the loss on the mound with five strikeouts.
In game two, the two sides trade single runs in the first before Adrian moved on top in the second thanks to a two-run homer from Ravin Toner. Adrian then blew the game open with eight runs in the fourth with Ostrowski providing another two-run, pinch-hit double.
Freshman Hillary Bunnelle (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) started on the mound, but lasted only three-plus innings in the loss. Jami Shafley did not allow an earned run in three innings to pick up the win for Adrian.
The Spartans return to action this Thursday, April 19 with a home doubleheader versus local-rival John Carroll University at 3:30 p.m.
