CLEVELAND, Ohio – Freshman pitcher Rebecca Taylor (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) threw a one-hitter in the opener, then saved the nightcap as the Case Western Reserve University softball team concluded a season-long eight-game home stand with a doubleheader sweep of Oberlin College on Friday afternoon at Mather Park. The Spartans won a pitcher's duel in game one, 3-1, then took game two, 6-5.

The Spartans (20-11) have won 14-of-18 and have already surpassed the team's win total from all of last season (19-25 overall). The 20 victories also mark just the fifth time in program history that the team team has reached at least 20 wins.

In a low-scoring game one, Oberlin grabbed a brief 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth when Emily King and Kristine Kuchta executed a double-steal, scoring Kuchta. The Spartans quickly tied the game in their half of the fourth when sophomore catcher Amy Taylor (Brier, Wash./Inglemoor) laced an RBI double to right center to drive home freshman pinch runner Lizzy Kolar (Morgantown, W. Va./University).

Two innings later in the sixth, the Spartans scored the eventual winning runs with RBI singles courtesy of senior third baseman Kaeleen Boden (Strongsville, Ohio/Holy Name) and senior designated player Ianna Wasser (Warwick, R.I./Toll Gate).

Rebecca Taylor did the rest for the Spartans, tossing a complete-game one-hitter. In Taylor's (14-9) 17th complete game of the season, she allowed just one earned run with a walk and five strikeouts.

At the plate, Amy Taylor was 2-for-3.

In game two, the Spartans struck first in the first when freshman second baseman Molly O'Brien (Northbrook, Ill./Loyola) led off with an infield single, stole second, and came around to score on an RBI single by freshman rightfielder Gena Roberts (Miami, Fla./Palmer-Trinity).

Case tacked on another score in the second as O'Brien hit an RBI single to plate freshman pitcher Hillary Bunnelle (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein). Then in the third, the Spartans scored twice more following a two-run single through the middle of the infield by Boden, plating Amy and Rebecca Taylor. Case kept the pressure on in the fourth when sophomore shortstop Makenzie Lein (Petersburg, Mich./Ida) and Roberts ripped back-to-back homeruns – Lein's to dead center and Roberts' to the opposite field in right.

Oberlin got its first run in the top of the fifth via an RBI double off the left field wall by Emily King. The Yeowomen picked up four more in the sixth thanks to a two-run homer by Katie Pieplow and a two-run single by King.

Rebecca Taylor then entered the game and recorded the final five outs with three strikeouts to pick up her second save of 2012.

Making her first career start on the mound, Bunnelle threw the first 5.1 innings and allowed five earned runs with two strikeouts to earn her first collegiate victory.

For the game, Roberts was 3-for-4.

The Spartans return to action this Monday, April 9 at the University of Mount Union. First pitch from 23rd Street Field in Alliance is set for 3:30 p.m.
