CLEVELAND, Ohio – Freshman rightfielder Gena Roberts (Miami, Fla./Palmer Trinity) posted a combined six base-hits as the Case Western Reserve University softball team split a doubleheader with Otterbein University on Tuesday at Mather Park. The Spartans saw their six-game winning streak snapped by a score of 10-6 in the opener, but rebounded to take the nightcap by an 8-3 tally.
With the split, the Spartans move to 13-8 for the season, while Otterbein sits at 11-5.
In game one, Otterbein got on the board in the top of the first as Laura Basford led off with a double to right, stole third, and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Erin Carpenter. Bassford then teamed up with Casey Clarridge for back-to-back solo homeruns in the third, making the score 3-0. The Cardinals then put the game out of reach with four runs in the fifth on five hits and an error. Brooke Albright provided the key hit of the inning with a two-out, two-run single.
The Spartans broke through with a single run in their half of the fifth when senior designated player Ianna Wasser (Warwick, R.I./Toll Gate) ripped a solo homer to left center. Case picked up two more runs in the sixth as Wasser hit an RBI single and senior third baseman Kaeleen Boden (Strongsville, Ohio/Holy Name) drove in one with a sacrifice fly, but Otterbein responded with three tallies on five hits in the seventh to make the score 10-3. The Spartans made things interesting with three in the bottom of the frame, but could get no closer as the Cardinals held on for the win.
On the mound, freshman Rebecca Taylor (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) went the distance and dropped to 9-8 for the season, allowing 10 runs while striking out six.
At the plate, Roberts was 4-for-4 with a double, a run scored and a run batted-in. Wasser was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
In game two, the Spartans struck first with three in the bottom of the first. Senior first baseman/designated player Lauren Wolz (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) drove in one with a double before freshman pitcher Christina Hunger (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) dropped a two-run double down the right field line.
Otterbein scored once in the second, but Case came back with three in the fifth as sophomore Makenzie Lein (Petersburg, Mich./Ida) hit an RBI single, then came around to score along with junior outfielder Chelsea Lasky (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) on a double-steal and error.
The Cardinals got back into the game with back-to-back homers from Clarridge and Carpenter in the sixth, but freshman pitcher Hillary Bunnelle (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) came on in relief to hold the lead. The Spartans then tacked on two more scores in their half of the sixth with Roberts providing another RBI single.
Hunger (4-0) pitched five innings and allowed three earned runs, while Bunnelle threw the final two frames to pick up the save in her collegiate debut.
At the plate, Wolz and Lein were each 2-for-3, while Roberts was 2-for-4 , making her 6-for-8 on the day.
The Spartans return to action this Thursday, March 29 at cross-town foe Baldwin-Wallace College at 3:30 p.m. at Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field in Berea.
