CLEVELAND, Ohio – Freshmen pitchers Rebecca Taylor (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) and Christina Hunger (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) each threw shutouts as the Case Western Reserve University softball team opened the home portion of its 2012 schedule with a pair of 8-0 victories versus Westminster College on Wednesday at Mather Park.
The Spartans improve to 8-7 overall heading into a pair of road doubleheaders this weekend. Westminster drops to 3-9.
Taylor (7-7) threw six shutout innings in game one and allowed only five hits while striking out 10 as the game was called due to the varsity run rule. Hunger also allowed five hits in six innings in game two and struck out a pair to earn her first collegiate victory.
In the opener, the Spartans scored twice in the third inning as freshman right fielder Gena Roberts (Miami, Fla./Palmer-Trinity) drilled her first career homerun to center field and Taylor hit an RBI double to left. Senior third baseman Kaeleen Boden (Strongsville, Ohio/Holy Name) added a solo homer in the second before Case put the game away with five runs in the sixth. Boden and Taylor each provided RBI in the final frame.
For the game, Taylor was also 3-for-4 at the plate.
In game two, Case opened with two runs in the first via an RBI single by Rebecca Taylor and an RBI double by sophomore catcher Amy Taylor (Brier, Wash./Inglemoor). The Spartans then added three more in the second with a two-run homer from senior first baseman/designated player Lauren Wolz (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge).
Case ended the game with three runs in the sixth as Wolz drove home the final run.
For the game, freshman second baseman Molly O'Brien (Northbrook, Ill./Loyola) was a perfect 4-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
The Spartans open play this weekend with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader at Denison University on Saturday, March 24 in Granville, Ohio.
