Wolz’s Six RBI Lead Spartan Softball to 9-1 Victory versus Rochester in Five Innings

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – Senior first baseman Lauren Wolz (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) drove in a career-high six runs as the Case Western Reserve University softball team defeated the University of Rochester (N.Y.), 9-1, in University Athletic Association Championship action on Thursday at Seminole Field. The game was called after five innings due to the varsity run-rule.

The Spartans (5-4, 2-2 UAA) return to action tomorrow at the UAA Championship with a pair of nationally-ranked opponents in No. 21 Washington University-St. Louis and No. 2 Emory University (Ga.) at 10:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., respectively.  Rochester drops to 1-6 overall and 0-4 in the UAA.

Case pounded out 11 hits in the game with Wolz going 3-for-3 with a triple, a walk and a career-high six runs batted-in. Freshman infielder Molly O'Brien (Northbrook, Ill./Loyola) joined the hit parade going 3-for-4 with a double.

On the mound, freshman Rebecca Taylor (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) allowed just one unearned run on two hits and two walks. Through nine games, Taylor (5-4) has logged 53.1 of the team's 59 innings and posted a 2.10 earned run average with 56 strikeouts.

The Spartans opened the game with five runs in the top of the first inning as the first three batters reached base and came around to score on Wolz's triple.

Case added another tally in the second when Wolz singled home O'Brien then scored three more in the fifth as Wolz drove home two more with a single. Rochester scored its lone run in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a Spartan error.

Following tomorrow's doubleheader with Wash. U. and Emory, the Spartans conclude the UAA Championship and their trip to the "Sunshine State" with two games on Saturday, March 17.
