CLERMONT, Fla. – Behind two strong pitching performances by freshman Rebecca Taylor (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe), the Case Western Reserve University softball team earned a pair of victories to open its annual spring trip at the National Training Center Games on Saturday. The Spartans defeated the State University of New York-Plattsburgh, 3-1, and The College of New Jersey, 4-3.
The Spartans improve to 3-2 overall for the young season and wrap up play at the NTC games tomorrow morning versus the State University of New York-Geneseo at 9:00 a.m.
Against SUNY-Plattsburgh, Taylor was dazzling, hurling all seven innings with just one earned run on six hits with two walks and 12 strikeouts.
Offensively, the Spartans did all their damage in their half of the seventh inning with Taylor aiding her own cause on a two-run single.
Versus TCNJ, the Spartans scored one in the third inning, two in the fourth and one more in the fifth. Taylor was solid again with a complete game, seven-hitter. In seven innings, the freshman allowed just one earned run with two walks and five strikeouts.
At the plate, three Spartans were 2-for-3 with freshman second baseman Molly O'Brien (Northbrook, Ill./Loyola), Taylor and senior first baseman Lauren Wolz (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) all picking up a pair of hits.
Freshman outfielder Gena Roberts (Miami, Fla./Palmer-Trinity) accounted for Case's first run when she hit her first career triple and came around to score on a single by sophomore infielder Makenzie Lein (Petersburg, Mich./Ida). Senior third baseman Kaeleen Boden (Strongsville, Ohio/Holy Name) provided a key two-run single in the fourth.
