BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Case Western Reserve University softball team wrapped up the opening weekend of the 2012 season with a 1-2 mark following a 4-3 loss to host Birmingham Southern College on Sunday at BSC Softball Park.

The Spartans are now idle until opening their annual spring break trip with three games in two days at the National Training Center games on Saturday and Sunday, March 10-11 in Clermont, Florida.

A day after striking out 21 batters and allowing just one run in 14 innings in her collegiate debut, freshman pitcher Rebecca Taylor (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) was roughed up a bit in the first inning.

The Panthers (5-0) put two on base with a hit batter and a single before Erin Lopez belted a three-run homer to left. Taylor then settled down and held the hosts to just one more run in the third on an RBI double by Bethany Fronk.

The Spartans staged a comeback in the fourth inning beginning when senior designated player Ianna Wasser (Warwick, R.I./Toll Gate) singled home freshman pinch-runner Shruthi Srinivas (Clemsford, Mass./Clemsford). Sophomore left fielder Katherine Seo (Salt Lake City, Utah/Olympus) accounted for the other two runs with a single that plated third baseman Kaeleen Boden (Strongsville, Ohio/Holy Name) and led to freshman pinch-runner Lizzy Kolar (Morgantown, W. Va./University) scoring on a run-down.

However, Fronk came on in relief on the mound for Panther starter Ronnie Ferris and did not surrender a run over the final three frames.

For the game, Wasser and Boden were each 2-for-3, while Seo, Kolar and Srinivas each recorded stolen bases.

Taylor (1-2) logged her third complete game, allowing four earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts. Through her first three collegiate contests, Taylor has a 1.75 earned run average with 25 strikeouts and zero walks in 20 innings pitched.

Case opens play at the NTC Games versus SUNY-Plattsburgh on March 10 at 11:00 a.m. The Spartans play later that afternoon versus The College of New Jersey at 1:30 p.m.

Following its three-game series in Clermont, the Spartans head to Altamonte Springs for the University Athletic Association Championship that will be held on Tuesday-Saturday, March 13-17.
