BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Freshman pitcher Rebecca Taylor (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) threw a pair of complete-game gems as the Case Western Reserve University softball team opened the 2012 season with a 1-1 performance at the BSC Invitational on Saturday at Birmingham Southern College Softball Park.
The Spartans dropped a 1-0 pitcher's duel to Division I Alabama A&M University in game one before bouncing back to shutout DIII Centre College (Ky.), 4-0, in game two.
Case (1-1) wraps up its opening weekend versus Birmingham-Southern at 11:00 a.m. (CDT) on Sunday, February 26.
Taylor's collegiate debut resulted in 14 innings with just one earned run on six hits with zero walks and 21 strikeouts. Versus AAMU, the rookie allowed just one run in the second inning when Jasmin Riley led off with a double and later scored on a failed pickoff attempt. Taylor also struck out 10.
The Spartan offense was held in-check by Anisa Britt, who surrendered just three hits while striking out three. Taylor provided the only extra-base hit for the Spartans with a double in the fourth.
Versus Centre, Taylor was again dominant, firing a two-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts. The Spartan offense collected seven hits from seven different batters en route to scoring three in the first and one in the fifth.
Sophomore catcher Amy Taylor (Brier, Wash./Inglemoor) drove in one with a double to left center in the first.
Following tomorrow's game at BSC, the Spartans are idle until the 2012 National Training Center games on Saturday and Sunday, March 10-11 in Clermont, Florida.
