Men’s XC Places Third at Knight Invite

The Case Western Reserve University men's cross country team, ranked 19th in Division III, secured a third-place finish at the 2019 Knight Invitational at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan on Saturday morning.

The Spartans finished the meet with 131 points, placing behind first-place Calvin College (43 points) and second-place John Carroll University (121 points).  Twenty-four total teams competed at Saturday's meet.

Racing at the same 8K course that will play host to the 2019 NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional Championships in November, the Spartans' two top finishers came in back-to-back, with senior David Hall placing 18th overall with a time of 25:43.2, followed by sophomore Spencer Weigand in 19th-place with a time of 25:44.9.  Freshman Jack Begley was CWRU's third finisher, crossing the line in a time of 25:47.4 to finish 25th overall, and freshman Robert St. Clair followed in 42nd place with a mark of 26:14.9.  Rounding out the team's top-five was freshman Joe Jaster in 47th place with a time of 26:24.3.

Other Spartans to compete in the varsity race included junior Yoshmar Pinal-Alfaro, who finished 75th with a time of 26:44.9, sophomore Logan Singer, who finished 86th with a time of 26:58.0, junior Eric Rachita, who finished 98th with a time of 27:10.8, and junior Dmytro Blundell, who finished 120th with a time of 27:45.8.

Hillsdale's Joseph Humes won the race, finishing first out of the 218 runners with a time of 24:49.9.

CWRU also had runners competing in the open 8K race later in the day.  Senior Karthik Ravichandran was the team's top finisher in the race with a time of 26:39.3 to finish fifth out of 154 runners, followed immediately by sophomore Alex Loeper in sixth with a time of 26:49.0.

Case Western Reserve will be back in action next weekend, traveling to Meadville, Pennsylvania for the Gator Invitational on Saturday, September 14th.
