2018 CWRU Men’s Cross Country Season Recap

2018 CWRU Men’s Cross Country Season Recap

The Case Western Reserve University men's cross country team turned one of its most balanced teams in program history into the best finish by a Spartans team at the NCAA Division III Championships in the last 15 years during the 2018 campaign.

After receiving an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Championships, the Spartans placed 21st overall among the field of 32 teams at the national meet, hosted at the Lake Breeze Golf Club in Winneconne, Wisconsin on Saturday, November 17th.  The team finished with an aggregate score of 516 points, as the 21st-place finish marked the team's best since placing 20th overall at the 2003 NCAA Championships.

Sophomore Trey Razanauskas led the Spartans at the NCAA Championships, finishing 64th overall out of the field of 280 runners at the meet with a season-best 8,000-meter time of 25:21.1.  It completed a strong first year at CWRU for the transfer from Washington and Jefferson, who was the team's top runner in each of the final three meets during the year.

Junior David Hall added a top-100 finish at the meet, placing 87th overall, and was followed by senior Zach Roshon in 166th place, junior Andrew Green in 174th place, and freshman Spencer Weigand in 210th place.  Also in action at the NCAA Championships for the Spartans were juniors Michael Klein (270th place) and Tim Andrews (274th place).  It was the first time competing at the NCAA Championship meet for all seven of the Spartans' runners.

The NCAA Championship appearance marked the first time the Spartans had qualified as a team since 2012, and it was the fourth-straight season that CWRU has been represented by at least one runner at the meet.  Case Western Reserve earned its at-large berth to the National Championship meet based largely on its fourth-place finish at the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Region Championships at the Blue River Cross Country Course in Shelbyville, Indiana on November 10th, its best regional finish since a third-place showing in 2012.  Three Spartan runners earned their first career individual all-region award at the 2018 NCAA Regional Championships (awarded to the top-35 finishers) including Razanauskas (13th place), Hall (16th place) and Roshon (34th place).  Rounding out CWRU's scorers at the meet were Weigand with a 41st-place finish, and Green with a 47th-place finish, out of 265 competitors at the meet.

Led by a 14th-place finish by Razanauskas, good for all-conference second team honors, the Spartans placed fifth at the 2018 UAA Championships.  It marked the team's best conference finish since placing third in 2012.  Hall added a 20th-place finish, while Weigand was the third Spartan to cross the finish line, placing 24th overall and fourth among first-year students at the meet to earn UAA All-Freshman Team honors.

Although Ranazauskas was the team's top runner in each of the final three races of the season, he was one of four different Spartans to lead the team at a meet during the campaign.  Green was the overall top finisher at the season-opening Sudeck Sunset Classic Stampede, helping the team place first at the event.  At the Allegheny Cross Country Classic, sophomore Yoshmar Pinal-Alfaro placed sixth overall to lead the team to a second-place finish out of 10 teams.  On September 29th, Hall led the Spartans to a second-place finish among 18 Division III squads at the All-Ohio Championships, finishing sixth out of 148 Division III competitors at the meet.  Hall also led the Spartans to the top finish among 27 teams at the Oberlin Inter-Regional Rumble on October 13th, finishing fourth individually out of 286 competitors at the meet.

The Spartans' success during the year saw the team receive votes in back-to-back United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association polls in the middle of the year, before the team made their initial appearance in the rankings on October 18th, checking in at 30th nationally.  CWRU finished the year ranked 21st, the highest that CWRU appeared in the poll since the end of the 2003 season.

In addition to their athletic success this year, 13 Spartans received UAA Fall Academic honors, including Green, Hall, junior Michael Hradesky, senior Robert Iriye, Klein, sophomore Rory Owens, senior Marc Parnell, sophomore Thomas Patton, sophomore Eric Rachita, junior Karthik Ravichandran, senior Ben Resnick, junior Luke Robbins and Roshon.
