Led by all-region finishes by junior Sam Merriman and senior Galen Caldwell, the Case Western Reserve University men's cross country team placed sixth out of 36 teams at the 2016 NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional Championships in Holland, Michigan on Saturday.
The Spartans finished the meet with a score of 192. Calvin won the meet with a score of 63, followed by Allegheny (116) and Ohio Northern (121).
Merriman was the team's top finisher, placing seventh overall with a time of 24:56.0 to earn all-region recognition for the second-straight season. Caldwell added the first all-region honors of his career, finishing 26th overall with a time of 25:30.0. The top-35 competitors at the meet receive all-region recognition.
Merriman now appears likely to qualify for the field for the NCAA Division III Championships in Louisville, Kentucky next Saturday, November 19th. The field of competitors for the NCAA Championships will be posted to ncaa.com by 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 13th.
Other scoring finishers for the Spartans included junior Aidan DeSanto in 51st-place with a time of 26:08.5, freshman Luke Robbins in 52nd-place with a time of 26:09.2, and sophomore James De La Cruz in 56th-place with a time of 26:10.3. Rounding out the top-seven for Case Western Reserve were senior Bryan Kelly in 103rd-place with a time 26:44.2 and junior Joseph Volpe in 108th place with a time 26:47.3.
