CWRU Cross Country to Compete at Two Weekend Meets

After a week off from competition, the Case Western Reserve University cross country teams will return to action this Saturday, September 17th, when the squad be split to run at both the Yellowjacket Invitational in Rochester, New York, and the Penn State Behrend Invitational in Erie, Pennsylvania.

The Spartans will be competing for the first time since September 2nd, when CWRU opened its season by hosting the Sudeck Sunset Classic Stampede.  Junior Danielle Kulpins won the women's race in a course-record time, leading the team to a victory, while the men placed second in the team standings, after juniors Sam Merriman and Aidan DeSanto claimed the top-two individual finishes.

The Case Western Reserve men and women both appeared in the USTFCCCA Great Lakes Regional Cross Country rankings, which were released on Wednesday.  The men rose three spots in the poll from the preseason rankings, and are now seventh in the region, while the women made their initial appearance in the poll, checking in at fifth.

The Yellowjacket Invitational, hosted by the University of Rochester, will be held at Genesee Valley Park, with the men's 8,000-meter race slated to begin at 11:00 a.m., and the women's 6,000-meter race scheduled for a noon start.  In addition to Case Western Reserve and Rochester, schools scheduled to compete at the meet include Alfred State, Alfred, Brockport, Cazenovia, Cornell, Cortland, Daemen, Fredonia State, Geneseo, Hamilton, Hobart & William Smith, Ithaca, John Carroll, Keuka, Mansfield, Morrisville State, Mount Union, Nazareth, Oberlin, Onondaga Community College, RIT, Ryerson, St. John Fisher, St. Lawrence and Wells.

The Spartans will be sending 14 men to the meet, including seniors Galen Caldwell, and Bryan Kelly, juniors DeSanto, James Gibson, Nicholas Knorz, Merriman and Ben Whitman, sophomores Joseph Cabral, James De La Cruz and Ben Resnick and freshmen Andrew Green, Jared Kokinos, Kathik Ravichandran and Luke Robbins.  CWRU will also have 14 women competing in the 6,000-meter race at the Yellowjacket Invitational, including senior Laura Wheeler, juniors Kate Erickson, Kulpins, Rachel Laveson, Elena Polivka, and Karyn Rapundalo, sophomores Jennifer Hoffmann, Amy Lin, Marissa Miyagi, Ellen Sears, Isa Torres-Padin, and Sophie Trikeriotis and freshmen Madeline Lindemann and Vanessa Pasadyn.

Case Western Reserve will also send a contingent of athletes to the Penn State Behrend Invitational on Saturday, with the women's 5,000-neter race scheduled for an 11:00 a.m. start, and the men's 8,000-meter race scheduled to begin at 11:45 a.m.  Competing for the CWRU men will be seniors Mitch Baller, Andrew Hamm and Patrick Leo, junior Ryan Honens, sophomores Paul Halliday and Robert Iriye, and freshmen Nathaniel Bailey, Evan Fritzke, Jacob Goldberg, Michael Klein and Ian Parker, while junior Maryellen Heebner, sophomore Maria DeRenzo and freshmen Mallorie Mitchem, Micah Pollak and Gillian Prater-Lee will be in action for the women.
