Spartan Men Seventh at Inter-Regional Rumble

OBERLIN, Ohio – With junior captain Tony Spalding (South Bend, Ind./Marian) at the head of the pack, the Case Western Reserve University men's cross country team placed seventh of 34 schools at Saturday afternoon's Inter-Regional Rumble hosted at Oberlin College's Cross Country Trail.

No. 7 nationally ranked SUNY Geneseo won the team title with 97 points. No. 30 Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.) was runner-up at 130. No. 29 SUNY Oneonta with 132, John Carroll University with 173 and the University of Mount Union with 204 rounded out the top five. The Spartans finished with 211.

Spalding placed 17th individually with a time of 26:04.7 on the 8k course. Spalding has led the Spartans in three of four varsity races this fall.

Freshman Sam Merriman (Middlesex, Vt./U-32) was the second Spartan to finish with a 26th-place time of 26:11.7. Rounding out the CWRU scoring was sophomore Galen Caldwell (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) in 35th (26:18.4), junior Ben Davis (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) in 57th (26:32.0) and junior Timothy Travitz (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) in 78th (26:48.1).

The Spartans are back in action at the University Athletic Association Championship on Saturday, November 1 in St. Louis. The opening gun is set to sound at 11:30 a.m. (CT).
