HUNTING VALLEY, Ohio – Senior co-captain David Dixon (Atlanta, Ga./Lakeside) placed fifth individually to lead the No. 33 nationally-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's cross country team to a runner-up finish at the 13th Annual Bill Sudeck Classic on Saturday afternoon at Squire Valleevue Farm.
Dixon finished the 6k course in 19:56.85 as the top Spartan in the 102-runner field.
Overall, five Spartans finished in the top 20 as the team scored 51 points. Allegheny College (Pa.) took home the team title with 39 points and the top two individual places. The University of Mount Union and John Carroll University scored 62 and 67 points, respectively, to place third and fourth.
Following Dixon was fellow senior co-captain Wyatt Hoch (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg), who finished in seventh place with a time of 20:18.59. Freshman Galen Caldwell (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) and sophomore Timothy Travitz (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) were the next Spartans to cross the finish line in ninth and 11th place, respectively, with times of 20:27.19 and 20:29.74. Sophomore Gilad Doron (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion) rounded out the scoring with a mark of of 20:49.00 (19th).
The Spartans are idle from competition next weekend but will be back on the course on Saturday, September 14 with split squad action. The team's top lineup will run at the Knight Invitational at Calvin College (Mich.) at 10:00 a.m., while the rest of the squad competes at the Behrend Invitational at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College at 11:00 a.m.
The Sudeck Classic is named in honor of legendary former coach and CWRU Hall of Famer, Bill Sudeck, who passed away in August of 2000. This year's meet was the 13th annual.
