2019-20 CWRU Men’s Indoor Track & Field Season Recap

2019-20 CWRU Men’s Indoor Track & Field Season Recap

The Case Western Reserve University men's indoor track and field team set five program records during the 2019-20 season, while also compiling two All-UAA honors during the University Athletic Association Indoor Track and Field Championships and qualified one member of the squad for the 2020 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the NCAA made the decision to cancel all remaining winter and spring championships. The decision by the NCAA was "based on the evolving COVID-19 public health threat, our ability to ensure the events do not contribute to spread of the pandemic, and the impracticality of hosting such events at any time during this academic year given ongoing decisions by other entities."

Senior Dominic Oddo earned entry to the field in the men's heptathlon, after setting a new school record score of 4,768 points in the event at the 2020 Polar Bear Final Qualifier Meet. His score was good for the 17th-best seed among individuals entered in the event for the NCAA Championships. Oddo's 4,768 points broke his previous school record of 4,709 points set at the 2019 Polar Bear Final Qualifier Meet.

Oddo also set a school record in the long jump when he placed second in the event at the 2020 UAA Indoor Championships, hosted by New York University. Oddo earned the All-UAA honor in the long jump with a new school record mark of 7.04 meters, which bested his previous school record of 7.00 meters set during the 2018 indoor season.

Sophomore Logan Singer claimed the other All-UAA honor at the indoor conference championships, as he finished second in the mile run with a new school record time of 4:13.03. That time bested the previous school record of 4:18.26 set by former Spartan Chris Kelly in 2011.

Singer also set a school record in the 1,000-meter run earlier in the year at the Kent State Tune Up. He placed first in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:29.04, which broke his previous school record of 2:32.43 set earlier in the indoor season.

One other program record was set throughout the 2019-20 indoor season. In the 55-meter dash, sophomore Juan Perez placed third in the event at the BW Mid-February Meet with a new school record time of 6.57. That time bested the previous school record of 6.62 set by former Spartan Nathaniel Wahner in 2017.

Five Spartan men also earned All-Great Lakes Region Honors from the USTFCCCA in their respective events, including senior Jonathan Haling (DMR), senior Michael Hradesky (DMR), first-year Joe Jaster (DMR), Oddo (heptathlon, long jump) and Singer (DMR, mile).

In addition to their work on the track and field, 23 members of the Case Western Reserve men's indoor track and field team received Winter UAA All-Academic recognition.
