Track & Field Falls to Carnegie Mellon in 12th Annual Battle for the Obelisk

Dominic Oddo clears a hurdle during the Battle for the Obelisk

The Case Western Reserve University track and field teams fell to Carnegie Mellon University 163-108 on Saturday in the 12th Annual Battle for the Obelisk held in the Veale Center. In the unique indoor dual meet scoring system, the men and women's scores are added together. The Spartan women fell 86-50, while the Spartan men fell 77-58.

On the men's side, senior Dominic Oddo won three events individually and was part of a winning relay team. Oddo took first place in the long jump with a jump of 6.88 meters, high jump with a mark of 1.75 meters and the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.74 seconds. Oddo teamed with seniors Jonathan Haling and Michael Hradesky and first-year Keith Roberts to win the 4x400 meter race with a time of 3:28.54. Haling was the other individual Spartan winner on the men's side, claiming first in the 400-meter race with a time of 50.36 seconds.

Eight male Spartans claimed second place finishes in the meet. In the field events, junior Jordan Butler finished second in the long jump with a jump of 6.75 meters, sophomore Ben Brisman claimed second in the weight throw with a toss of 14.64 meters, and junior Ryan Burns claimed second in the pole vault with a mark of 3.72 meters.

On the track, junior Trey Razanauskas finished second in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:44.43. First-year Eli Fragnoli finished behind Oddo in the 60-meter hurdles at 8.85 seconds, and first-year Keith Cartwright claimed second in the 200-meter run at 24.03 seconds. Haling finished second in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.18 seconds, and Hradesky finished second in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:59.02.

For the women, five Spartans won events and the team swept the podium at the shot put and high jump events. In the shot put, junior Eleanor Gaddy claimed first with a toss of 11.53 meters, junior Emma Hammelef was second with a throw of 11.13 meters, and junior Taylor Jackson finished third with an 11.04-meter throw. Senior Bailey Flint won the high jump event with a mark of 1.60 meters, first-year Mia Vargo finished in second with a mark of 1.60 meters in more attempts, and junior Isabella Jimenez claimed third with a mark of 1.55 meters.

With a toss of 15.34 meters, Jackson also won the weight throw event. Other first place finishes were senior Samantha Kelts in the triple jump with a mark of 10.50 meters and junior Julie Hines in the 400-meter dash, finishing with a time of 1:10.26. First-year Melissa Phung claimed second place in the 800-meter run at 2:26.78, Hines was a second place finisher in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.22 seconds, and Flint claimed second in the long jump with a 4.97-meter mark. 

The track and field teams will next travel to Ada, Ohio for the Joe Banks Invitational hosted by Ohio Northern University on Saturday, February 1.
