Graduate student Cassandra Laios and junior Abbey Waltz combined to set three school records, as the Case Western Reserve University track and field teams were split between to meets this weekend. The CWRU throwers were in action at the Carnegie Mellon Quad Meet in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, while the rest of the squad competed at the Otterbein April Fool's Invitational in Westerville, Ohio.
Laios competed at the Carnegie Mellon Quad Meet and broke her previous school records in both the hammer throw and shot put. Laios hit a mark of 54.16 meters in the hammer throw, which broke her previous school record of 52.48 meters. She then had a toss of 13.48 meters in the shot put, which once again broke her previous school record of 13.29 meters.
At the Otterbein April Fool's Invitational, the Spartan women finished fourth among the 15 teams in action with 61 points, while Otterbein won the meet (159 points), John Carroll finished second (108 points) and Baldwin Wallace placed third (88 points). The men, who tallied 10 top-five finishes, placed second out of 16 teams at the meet with 73.5 points. Otterbein finished first with 160 points and John Carroll placed third with 61 points.
Waltz led the Case Western Reserve women, finishing second in the pole vault with a mark of 3.52 meters. That mark bests her previous school record of 3.42 meters set last outdoor season.
Other top performers for the Spartan women at the meet came from junior Madeline Lindemann in the 5,000-meter run (second, 17:57.19), senior Jennifer Hoffmann in the 1,500-meter run (third, 4:55.58), sophomore Grace Kemerer in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (third, 12:02.96 and senior Olivia Newman in the 400-meter hurdles (fourth, 1:09.27).
In addition, the women's 4x100-meter relay team of Newman, sophomore Julie Hines, junior Bari Love and freshman Ana Scherf finished fourth in the event with a time of 50.49.
Winning an event for the Spartan men was sophomore Jordan Butler. Butler claimed the title in the long jump with a mark of 6.48 meters.
Other top performers for the Spartan men were sophomore Trey Razanauskas in the 1,500-meter run (third, 4:04.16), freshman Logan Singer in the 1,500-meter run (fourth, 4:05.60), sophomore Eric Rachita in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (fourth, 10:02.27), junior Michael Hradesky in the 1,500-meter run (fifth, 4:06.00), junior David Hall in the 5,000-meter run (third, 15:13.05) and junior Jonathan Haling in the 800-meter run (fourth, 1:59.03). The men's 4x400-meter relay team of Haling, freshman Juan Perez, Singer and freshman Bryden Moxley also added a third-place finish in the event with a time of 3:33.67.
Case Western Reserve will return to competition next weekend, when the team gets ready to compete at two meets on Saturday, April 6th. Members of the team will either be competing at the Marv Frye Invitational, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio, or they will be at the Bob Kahn Invitational, hosted by Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio.
