Spartan Men Finish Fourth; Women Place Fifth at All-Ohio Champs

The Case Western Reserve University men's and women's track and field teams competed at the 2019 All-Ohio Indoor Championships at Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio on Saturday.

The Spartan men finished fourth out of 18 teams with 70.5 points, while the women finished in fifth place with 63 points. Otterbein and Mount Union tied for the win on the men's side with 124 points apiece, while Otterbein won the women's portion with 110 points.

Sophomore Trey Razanauskas and sophomore Jordan Butler each highlighted the Spartans performances, as they earned first-place finishes in their respective events. Razanauskas claimed the title in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:58.97, while Butler earned the top spot in the long jump with a mark of 6.77 meters. In addition, freshman Grant McCarthy placed fifth in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:22.18.

The men's distance medley relay team of freshman Logan Singer, freshman Bryden Moxley, junior Michael Hradesky and freshman Daniel Grasing claimed a third-place finish in the event with a time of 10:34.76. Junior Jonathan Haling, junior Darius Inzar, sophomore Musa Hakim Jr. and freshman Juan Perez added a third-place finish in the 4x200-meter relay with a time of 1:34.13, while Haling, Hradesky, Perez and Singer also added a fifth-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:31.98.

Hradesky earned a second-place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:57.43, while senior Ananth Suresh finished third in the triple jump with a mark of 13.35 meters. Junior David Hall registered a fourth-place finish in the 3,000-meter run (8:47.59), while Haling added a fifth-place finish in the 400-meter dash (51.39) and Grasing placed fifth in the one-mile run (4:28.51).

For the women on Saturday, graduate student Cassandra Laios claimed the title in the weight throw with a school-record mark of 18.05 meters, besting her previous school record of 17.92 meters set at last season's All-Ohio Indoor Championships. Laios also added a first-place finish in the shot put with a toss of 13.09 meters.

Other Spartan highlights from the All-Ohio meet included junior Madeline Lindemann crossing the finish line in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:52.89 to place first in the event. Senior Olivia Newman earned a third-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.98, while junior Samantha Kelts placed fifth in the triple jump with a distance of 10.61 meters.

Additionally, the women's distance medley relay team of junior Vanessa Pasadyn, senior Isabel Torres-Padin, junior Shahed Eid and junior Maria King finished second in the event with a time of 12:50.52. Newman also teamed with sophomore Julie Hines, junior Bari Love and freshman Ana Scherf to place fifth in the 4x200-meter relay with a new school record time of 1:49.22. To close out the meet on women's side, Newman, Hines, King and Scherf finished fourth in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 4:12.37.

Each of the Spartans who earned top-three finishes in their respective events received All-Ohio recognition for their performances.

The Spartans were also in action on Friday, with a group competing at the Mid-February Meet, hosted by Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio. The men finished third out of nine teams with 71 points, while the women placed sixth out of nine teams with 62 points.

Spartan men recording top-five finishes at the meet included junior Brian Holden in the weight throw (second, 13.31m), sophomore Skyler Wadas in the weight throw (fourth, 12.45m), sophomore Eric Rachita in the 3,000-meter run (second, 9:07.28), senior Drew Zapor in the pole vault (third, 3.80m), sophomore Ryan Burns in the pole vault (fourth, 3.80m), senior David Prigg in the pole vault (fifth, 3.50m), junior Michael Klein in the 5,000-meter run (third, 16:00.69), junior Tim Andrews in the 5,000-meter run (16:26.58), sophomore Thomas Patton in the 800-meter run (third, 1:58.68) and freshman Spencer Weigand in the one-mile run (fourth, 4:34.52).

Top-five finishes for the women came from senior Maryellen Heebner in the 55-meter hurdles (third, 9.30), freshman Jana Fisher in the one-mile run (third, 5:28.87), senior Hayley Kline in the 400-meter dash (third, 1:04.70), sophomore Emma Hammelef in the pole vault (fourth, 2.74m), junior Melissa Cuellar in the shot put (fifth, 11.05m), sophomore Madison Vargo in the 800-meter run (fifth, 2:31.36) and senior Sophie Trikeriotis in the 3,000-meter run (fifth, 11:28.98).

The Spartans will be back in action next weekend as they head to the Kent State Tune Up at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio on Saturday, February 16th.
