2017-18 CWRU Men’s Indoor Track & Field Season Recap

The Case Western Reserve University men's indoor track and field team set five program records during the 2017-18 season, while also compiling five All-UAA honors during the University Athletic Association Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Leading the way for the Spartans at the UAA Championships, hosted by CWRU in Cleveland, Ohio at the Veale Athletic Center, was senior Sam Merriman, who earned All-UAA honors in a pair of events. He claimed the title in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:46.28, and then finished second in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:36.33.

Sophomore Dominic Oddo added an All-UAA honor with a second-place finish in the long jump with a distance of 6.75 meters and senior Zak Hurd finished third in the jump with a distance of 6.63 meters. The men's 4x400-meter relay of senior Grant Mlack, senior Nicholas Knorz, sophomore Jonathan Haling and sophomore Michael Hradesky teamed together to finish second in the event with a time of 3:25.15.

The five program records set throughout the 2017-18 indoor season all occurred before the UAA Championships. In the 300-meter dash, senior Andrew Ibibo finished third in the event at the Kent State Golden Gala with a time of 35.64 seconds, breaking the record of 36.19 seconds set by Andre Christian in 1994. Also at the Kent State Golden Gala, Hradesky finished third in the 1,000-meter run with a new school-record time of 2:33.46, which bested the previous school record of 2:34.56 set by former Spartan Joe Ledger during the 2016-17 indoor season. At the 10th-Annual Battle for the Obelisk, Oddo earned the title in the long jump with a mark of 7.00 meters, which surpassed his previous school record of 6.97 meters set earlier in the indoor season.

Oddo also set the school record in the heptathlon at the All-Ohio Division Multi-Events Championship, as he finished second out of nine competitors with 4,615 points. Oddo's 4,615 points broke the previous school record of 4,523 points set by Michael Cohara in 2012. Merriman then capped off the school records at the All-Ohio Indoor Championships when he finished first in the 3,000-meter run with a school-record time of 8:33.13. He broke his previous school record of 8:36.44 set in 2017.

Three Spartan men also earned All-Great Lakes Region Honors from the USTFCCCA in their respective events, including Hradesky (800m run), Merriman (3,000m run, 5,000m run) and Oddo (heptathlon).

In addition to their work on the track and field, 26 members of the Case Western Reserve men's indoor track and field team received Winter UAA All-Academic recognition.
