Case Western Reserve University seniors Nimi Gupta, Andrew Ibibo, Danielle Kulpins, junior Shannon Carroll and sophomores Michael Hradesky and Dominic Oddo were each selected as All-Region honorees for the 2018 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field season by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
The top-five individuals in each event from each region earned the All-Region distinction, in addition to each of the members of the region's top-three relays. CWRU is a member of the Great Lakes Region.
Kulpins was the lone CWRU honoree to earn all-region honors in two events. Her time of 10:40.17 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase was the best this season by a Great Lakes Region runner. The mark, which was also a school record and ranks as the fourth fastest in Division III this season, was recorded at the All-Ohio Championships on April 14th. Kulpins was also fifth in the Great Lakes Regin in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:23.40, the 44th-best in Division III this year.
Gupta claimed all-region honors in the hammer throw with her mark of 50.48 meters at the 2018 University Athletic Association Outdoor Track and Field Championships on April 28th. Carroll's first-career appearance in the heptathlon was good for an all-region performance, as she notched a score of 4,186 at the Gregory Invitational on May 16th, the third-best mark in the region and 43rd across all of Division III.
For the CWRU men, Ibibo earned All-Region honors in the 400-meter dash, as his time of 48.36 seconds in the event at the Harrison Dillard Twilight Meet on May 11th was the fourth-best in the region in 2018 and 34th in all of Division III. Hradesky earned his all-region honor at the Harrison Dillard Twilight Meet as well, crossing the line in the 800-meter dash with a time of 1:54.78 for the fourth-best time among Great Lakes Region runners in 2018. Oddo claimed and all-region honor in the decathlon, as his score of 5,864 (also on his first attempt at the multi-event) ranked third in the Great Lakes Region and 37th in Division III.
While the 2018 season has come to a close for the majority of the Spartans, Kulpins will be competing in the steeplechase at the 2018 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships in La Crosse, Wisconsin this week. Preliminaries of the event will be held on Thursday, with the top-five finishers in each heat and the next four best times advancing to the finals of the event on Saturday.
