The Case Western Reserve University men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Otterbein April Fool's Invitational hosted by Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio on Friday.
With eight top-five finishes at the meet, the Spartan men finished second among the 10 teams in action with 96 points, while Otterbein won the meet (100 points) and Malone finished third (95 points). The women, who tallied seven top-five finishes placed fourth out of 12 teams at the meet with 81 points. Otterbein finished first with 169 points, Malone placed second with 89 pointsa and Eastern Michigan finished third with 82 points.
Senior Andrew Ibibo led the Case Western Reserve men, winning the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.63. He also teamed with sophomore Jonathan Haling, sophomore Michael Hradesky and freshman Thomas Patton in the 4x400-meter relay to finish first in the event with a time of 3:27.80.
Other first-place finishes for the Spartan men came from senior Aidan DeSanto in the 1,500-meter run. DeSanto picked up the win in the event with a new meet record time of 4:03.41, besting the previous meet record of 4:09.11 set last year. Senior James Gibson followed DeSanto in the 1,500-meter run with a second-place finish (4:05.12).
Other top performers for the Spartan men at the meet came from sophomore Dominic Oddo in the long jump (third, 6.42m), freshman Kai Fletcher in the triple jump (fourth, 12.33m), freshman Jordan Butler in the long jump (fifth, 6.11m) and Haling in the 200-meter dash (fifth, 22.87).
Winning events for the Spartan women were senior Danielle Kulpins and junior Jennifer Hoffmann. Kulpins picked up the win in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a new meet record time of 10:57.07, besting the previous meet record of 11:27.79 set by Otterbein's Heather Sandvik last season. Hoffmann finished first in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:57.74, while sophomore Vanessa Pasadyn added a second-place finish in the event with a time of 4:59.20.
In addition, junior Isabel Torres-Padin placed third in the 5,000-meter run (17:58.05), senior Rachel Willard finished second in the triple jump (11.08m) and fifth in the long jump (5.03m), sophomore Samantha Kelts placed fifth in the triple jump (10.51m) and Pasadyn added a fifth-place finish in the 800-meter run (2:25.79).
The CWRU throwers were also in action this weekend, competing at the Carnegie Mellon Quad Meet in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on Saturday.
Case Western Reserve will return to competition next weekend, when the team gets ready to compete at two meets on Saturday, April 7th. Members of the team will either be competing at the Marv Frye Invitational, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio, or they will be at the Bob Kahn Invitational, hosted by Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio.
