Six individuals from the Case Western Reserve University men's and women's indoor track and field teams have earned All-Great Lakes Regions honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) as the 2017-18 NCAA Division III honorees were announced on Monday.
Three Spartan men and three Spartan women earned honors in their respective events, including sophomore Michael Hradesky (800m run), senior Sam Merriman (3,000m run, 5,000m run), sophomore Dominic Oddo (heptathlon), senior Danielle Kulpins (5,000m run), senior Cassandra Laios (shot put, weight throw) and junior Olivia Newman (400m dash, 60m hurdles).
Hradesky earned a sixth-place finish at the 2018 University Athletic Association Indoor Track and Field Championships with a time of 1:55.02.
Merriman's best time in the 3,000-meter run came at the 2018 All-Ohio Championships where he earned the title of the event and drowning a new school record time of 8:33.13 to best his previous school record of 8:36.44 set in 2017. Also at the UAA Championships, in the 5,000-meter run, Merriman finished first with a time of 14:46.28.
Oddo set a new school record in the heptathlon at the All-Ohio Mult-Events Championships after scoring 4,615 points to break the previous school record of 4,523 points set by Michael Cohara in 2012. He placed within the top four of each event throughout the two-day championship. Oddo won the long jump with a leap of 6.78 meters (762 points), which set a new meet record, and he also finished tied for first in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.56 (846 points).
With a season-best time of 17:29.27 at the UAA Championships, Kulpins received honors for her efforts in the 5,000-meter run.
Laios earned a fifth-place finish in the shot put at the Kent State Golden Gala with a toss of 14.09 meters, which bested her previous school record of 13.65 set during the 2016 indoor season. In addition, Laios claimed the title in the weight throw at the All-Ohio Championships with a school-record mark of 17.92 meters, besting her previous school record of 17.62 meters.
Newman, also at the UAA Indoor Championships, recorded a new school-record time in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.17, which bested the previous record of 9.23 set by Nataija Brown in 2012. She also added a fifth-place finish in the 400-meter run with a time of 59.12.
The Spartans are now in preparation for the 2018 outdoor season which is set to kick-off on Friday, March 16th at the Washington & Lee University Track Carnival.
