The Case Western Reserve University men's and women's track and field teams competed at the 2018 All-Ohio Indoor Championships at Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio on Saturday.
The Spartan men finished second out of 18 teams with 96 points, while the women finished in sixth place with 61 points. Mount Union won both the men's portion of Saturday's meet, while Otterbein won the women's portion.
Senior Sam Merriman highlighted the Spartans performances as he finished first in the 3,000-meter run with a school-record and meet-record time of 8:33.13. He breaks his previous school record of 8:36.44 set in 2017 and he breaks the previous meet record of 8:37.19 set by Caleb Muller of Marietta in 2013. Sophomore David Hall also added a third-place finish in the event with a time of 8:55.54.
The men's distance medley relay team of senior Nicholas Knorz, sophomore Michael Hradesky, freshman Thomas Patton and senior James Gibson claimed a second-place finish in the event with a time of 10:33.93. Hradesky also teamed with senior Andrew Ibibo, sophomore Dominic Oddo and sophomore Jonathan Haling to finish fourth in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:26.20.
Oddo earned a second-place finish in the long jump with a mark of 6.89 meters, while senior Zak Hurd finished third with a distance of 6.73 meters. Ibibo also added a third-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.46.
For the women on Saturday, senior Cassandra Laios claimed the title in the weight throw with a school-record mark of 17.92 meters, besting her previous school record of 17.62 meters. Laios also added a second-place finish in the shot put with a toss of 13.26 meters.
Other Spartan highlights from the All-Ohio meet included senior Danielle Kulpins crossing the finish line in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:16.34 to place second in the event. Senior Rachel Willard earned a second-place finish in the triple jump with a distance of 10.67 meters, while junior Olivia Newman placed third in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.56. Additionally, sophomore Vanessa Pasadyn contributed a fourth-place finish in the 800-meter run with a school-record time of 2:18.60, breaking her previous school record of 2:19.17 set last indoor season.
Each of the Spartan who earned top-three finishes in their respective events received All-Ohio recognition for their performances.
The Spartans were also in action on Friday, with a group competing at the Mid-February Meet, hosted by Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio. The women finished sixth out of 16 teams with 48 points, while the men placed ninth out of 15 teams with 43 points.
Spartan women recording top-five finishes at the meet included sophomore Shahed Eid in the 800-meter run (first, 2:29.35), freshman Madison Vargo in the 800-meter run (third, 2:29.97), junior Ellen Sears in the 3,000-meter run (second, 11:14.86), freshman Kiera Olson in the 3,00-meter run (third, 11:16.80) and junior Marissa Miyagi in the 3,000-meter run (fifth, 11:26.96).
Top-five finishes for the men came from senior Adrian Cannon in the 200-meter dash (fourth, 23.76) and in the 400-meter dash (fifth, 53.08), sophomore James De La Cruz in the one-mile run (second, 4:37.72), sophomore Robert Iriye in the 5,000-meter run (third, 16:29.50), sophomore Michael Klein in the 5,000-meter run (fourth, 16:34.32), freshman Tim Andrews in the 5,000-meter run (fifth, 16:39.59) and sophomore Rueben Dockery in the pole vault (fifth, 3.30m).
The Spartans will be back in action next weekend as they head to the Mount Union Tune Up at the University of Mount Union in Alliance, Ohio on Saturday, February 17th.
