The Case Western Reserve University men's and women's track and field teams turned in strong performances at the SPIRE Invitational, hosted by Carnegie Mellon University in Geneva, Ohio on Saturday.
With nine top-five finishes at the meet, the Spartan women placed second out of 12 teams in action with 90 points. The men, who tallied 12 top-five finishes, placed third out of 13 teams at the meet with 71 points.
The Spartan women totaled four first place finishes on the day, with junior Olivia Newman winning the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.46, sophomore Samantha Kelts placing first in the triple jump with a distance of 10.20 meters and senior Cassandra Laios claiming first in the weight throw with a toss of 16.52 meters and first in the shot put with a mark of 12.45 meters.
Adding a third-place finish was junior Shannon Carroll in the shot put (11.57m), while sophomore Vanessa Pasadyn finished third in the one-mile run (5:25.18) and senior Rachel Willard placed third in the triple jump (10.06m). Sophomore Bailey Flint added a fourth-place finish in the triple jump (9.90m) and freshman Abby Waltz contributing a fifth-place finish in the pole vault (3.22m).
The women's 4x400-meter relay team of Pasadyn, junior Maria DeRenzo, sophomore Shahed Eid and freshman Madison Vargo earned a fourth-place finish in the event with a time of 4:20.32.
Adding top performances by a Spartan man during the meet were freshman Kai Fletcher in the high jump (third, 1.86m) and in the triple jump (fourth, 12.76m), freshman Jordan Butler in the high jump (fifth, 1.86m), senior Andrew Ibibo in the 400-meter dash (third, 50.30) and in the 200-meter dash (fifth, 22.82), sophomore Jonathan Haling in the 400-meter dash (fourth, 50.68), senior Zak Hurd in the 60-meter dash (third, 7.16), senior Ben Zelkin in the 60-meter dash (fourth, 7.19), junior Tyler Bushman in the weight throw (third, 15.07m) and senior Alex Nesvisky in the weight throw (fifth, 14.37m).
The Spartans will return to competition next weekend when the team hosts the 10th Annual Battle for the Obelisk on Saturday, January 27th against Carnegie Mellon University.
