2016-17 CWRU Men’s Indoor Track & Field Season Recap

The Case Western Reserve University men's indoor track and field team set six program records during the 2016-17 season, while also compiling five All-UAA honors during the University Athletic Association Indoor Track and Field Championships and qualified one member of the squad for the 2017 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Senior Nathaniel Wahner earned a ninth-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a school-record time of 22.11 and a 13th-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.82 at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Naperville, Illinois.

Wahner achieved his qualifying times in each event after leading the way for the Spartans at the UAA Indoor Championships, hosted by Brandeis University. Wahner ran a time of 48.89 in the finals of the 400-meter dash to win the UAA Title in the event, becoming the first Spartan since 2014 to win the title in the 400-meter dash. Wahner's time of 48.89 also set a new school-record in the event, besting Wahner's previous mark of 49.44 set during the preliminaries on the first day of the UAA Indoor Championships. Wahner also teamed with junior Andrew Ibibo, sophomore Joseph Cabral and freshman Jonathan Haling in the 4x400-meter relay to win the UAA title in the event with a time of 3:22.56, becoming the first-ever CWRU's men's relay team to win the event.

Junior Sam Merriman added an All-UAA honor with a third-place finish in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:01.43. On Saturday of the Championships, freshman Dominic Oddo picked up a third-place finish in the long jump with a distance of 6.62 meters and sophomore Tyler Bushman also placed third in the weight throw with a mark of 14.87 meters.

One other program record was set by the team during the UAA Championships. In the 3,000-meter run, Merriman recorded a time of 8:36.44 to finish fifth in the event.

The three other program records were set throughout the 2016-17 indoor season. In the 55-meter dash, Wahner finished first in the event at the Greater Cleveland Colleges Meet with a time of 6.62, breaking the record of 6.65 set by Desmond Ellis during the 2006 indoor season. Also at the Greater Cleveland Colleges Meet, senior Joe Ledger finished first in the 1,000-meter run with a new school-record time of 2:34.56, which bested the previous school record of 2:36.79 set in 1994 by Shaun Brown. At the SPIRE Invitational, junior Ben Zelkin notched a mark of 6.96 in the preliminaries of the 60-meter dash, besting the previous school-record of 7.07 set by sophomore Rasheed Ajala last season.

Seven Spartan men also earned All-Great Lakes Region Honors from the USTFCCCA in their respective events, including Cabral (4x400m relay, DMR), junior Aidan DeSanto (DMR), Haling (4x400m relay), Ibibo (4x400m relay), Ledger (DMR), Merriman (3,000m run), and Wahner (200m dash, 400m dash, 4x400m relay, DMR).
