Case Western Reserve University junior Sam Merriman was named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District Men's Track and Field / Cross Country Team, for his outstanding performance both on the track and in the classroom.
By virtue of being named to the Academic All-District Team, Merriman will be placed on the ballot for the Academic All-America team, with first-, second-, and third teams to be announced on Wednesday, June 21st.
This is the first career Academic All-District honor for Merriman.
Merriman capped off his stellar 2016 cross country campaign with a 21st-place finish out of 278 runners at the 2016 NCAA Division III Championships in Louisville, Kentucky to earn the first All-America honor of his career. In addition, he finished seventh individually to earn All-Region honors at the NCAA DIII Great Lakes Championships, and claimed his first career All-UAA honor after finishing third at the conference championships. Merriman became the first Spartan to claim All-UAA honors since 2012, and the 13th CWRU runner overall and the first since Dominic Smith in 2008 to receive All-UAA First Team honors.
During the indoor track season, Merriman added an All-Region honor in the 3,000-meter run and claimed an All-UAA honor with a third-place finish in the 5,000-meter run. Merriman would then go on to earn an All-Region honor in the 5,000-meter run during the outdoor season, after breaking the school-record in the event with a time of 14:29.93. He also won the 5,000-meter conference title at the outdoor conference championships. Merriman concluded his junior year by receiving the Bill Sudeck Outstanding Student-Athlete Department Award.
Academically, Merriman has recorded a 4.0 grade point average as an engineering physics major. In addition, he became the second Spartan ever and the first men's cross country runner in University Athletic Association history to win the Elite 90 Award, for having the highest grade point average among competitors at the NCAA Championships. Merriman has been named a USTFCCCA Scholar-Athlete awardee and has been recognized on six occasions as a UAA All-Academic honoree.
Voting for the Academic All-District team is conducted by members of CoSIDA. Case Western Reserve is part of District 7, which includes Division III student-athletes from colleges in Illinois, Indiana and Ohio.
