Seven individuals from the Case Western Reserve University men's indoor track and field team have earned All-Great Lakes Region Honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) as the 2016-17 NCAA Division III honorees were announced on Monday.
Seven Spartan men combined to earn 11 honors in their respective events, including sophomore Joseph Cabral (4x400m relay, DMR), junior Aidan DeSanto (DMR), freshman Jonathan Haling (4x400m relay), junior Andrew Ibibo (4x400m relay), senior Joe Ledger (DMR), junior Sam Merriman (3,000m run) and senior Nathaniel Wahner (200m dash, 400m dash, 4x400m relay, DMR).
The 4x400-meter relay team of Cabral, Haling, Ibibo and Wahner placed first at the 2017 University Athletic Association Indoor Track and Field Championships with a time of 22.56.
The distance medley relay team of Cabral, DeSanto, Ledger and Wahner placed first at the 2017 ONU Polar Bear Final Qualifier with a time of 10:24.04.
Along with his contributions in the relays, Wahner also set school records in the 200-meter dash and 400-meter dash. Wahner ran a time of 22.23 in the 200m to place first at the Polar Bear Final Qualifier this past weekend and ran a time of 48.89 in the 400m to place first at the UAA Indoor Championships on February 26th. Both of those times were good enough to qualify for the 2017 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend.
Merriman's best time in the 3,000-meter run came at the 2017 UAA Indoor Championships where he earned a fifth-place finish with a time of 8:36.44.
The Spartans are now in preparation for the 2017 outdoor season which is set to kick-off on Friday, March 17th at the Washington & Lee University Track Carnival.
