The Case Western Reserve University men's and women's track and field teams turned in strong performances at the Joe Banks Invitational, hosted by Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio on Saturday.
The men scored 79 points to finish third out of 15 teams at the meet. Otterbein University won the competition with 107.5 points, while host Ohio Northern placed second with 91 points. In the women's portion of the meet, Case Western Reserve placed fifth with 64 points, finishing behind first-place Ohio Northern (121.5 points) and second-place Cedarville (107).
The Spartan men tallied three first-place finishes, with all three coming from senior sprinter Nathaniel Wahner. Wahner finished first in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.17, then took first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.80 and ended with a first-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.13.
Wahner also teamed with junior Adrian Cannon, freshman Jonathan Haling and senior Nico Ericksen-Deriso to place second in the 4x200-meter relay with a time of 1:31.17. In the 4x400-meter relay, Cannon teamed with freshman Dominic Oddo, junior Grant Mlack and freshman Mitchell Webb to finish second with a time of 3:30.15.
In the men's 800-meter run, senior Joe Ledger and placed third with a time of 1:59.63 and freshman Michael Hradesky placed fourth with a time of 2:00.00. Other top finishers for the Spartan men on Saturday included Mlack in the 60-meter hurdles (fourth, 8.62) and junior Zak Hurd in the long jump (fifth, 6.14 meters).
The Spartan women were led by a second-place finish by sophomore Olivia Newman in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.73. Newman also teamed with junior Skylar Braga, senior Abby Casalnova and freshman Bari Love to place fifth in the 4x200-meter relay with a time of 1:50.24. Casalnova then teamed with freshmen Maria King, Brianna Rees and Tatum Naylor to finish fifth in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 4:19.23.
Other top finishers for the Spartan women included senior Temi Omilabu in the weight throw (third, 15.03 meters), freshman Bailey Flint in the high jump (third, 1.52 meters), junior Cassandra Laios in the weight throw (fourth, 14.89 meters) and in the shot put (fourth, in a new school-record of 12.64 meters), freshman Vanessa Pasadyn in the 800-meter run (fourth, 2:23.21) and freshman Samantha Kelts in the high jump (sixth, 1.32 meters).
The Spartans will continue the indoor season this Friday, February 10th as they travel to Berea, Ohio for the Mid-February Meet hosted by Baldwin Wallace University.
