The Case Western Reserve University men's and women's track and field teams will host rival Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.) in the Ninth Annual Battle for the Obelisk this Saturday, January 28th at 2:00 p.m. at the Veale Center.
"It's always a great privilege to host our rival for a traditional dual," said Head Coach Eric Schmuhl. "Every year, this thing can be won by either team and that's a lot of fun to be a part of. Both teams leave better for having competed in this contest."
The Obelisk trophy is awarded to the winning school in what has become an annual dual meet between the two programs started by former CWRU Head Coach Steve Rubin. The team with the best men's and women's combined score takes home the Obelisk.
Last season, CWRU scored a combined 146 points (88 women/58 men) to capture the Obelisk.
The Spartans will look to carry over the momentum from last Saturday's performance at the SPIRE Invitational. The men's team finished third with individual titles from freshman Dominic Oddo in the long jump and senior Nathaniel Wahner in the 400-meter dash. Junior Ben Zelkin also placed third in the 60-meter dash.
Crossing the finish line in the 60-meter preliminaries with a time of 6.96, Zelkin bested the previous school-record of 7.07 set by sophomore Rasheed Ajala last season.
On the women's side, the Spartans finished seventh with two individual first-place performances. Junior thrower Cassandra Laios won the title in the shot put and senior thrower Temi Omilabu won the weight throw.
Fans can watch a live VIDEO broadcast of the meet and a link for live stats will be posted to athletics.case.edu as soon as they are made available.
