2015-16 CWRU Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Season Recap

The Case Western Reserve University men's track and field team concluded the 2016 outdoor season with many noteworthy performances, setting three program records and recording six All-UAA honors at the University Athletic Association Championships.

The Spartans capped off their outdoor season by setting the school record in the 4x100-meter relay at the Great Lakes Elite Meet. The relay team of junior Nathaniel Wahner, sophomore Adrian Cannon, sophomore Zak Hurd and freshman Rasheed Ajala finished third overall at the meet with a time of 41.88 seconds. This time was over a half a second better than the previous school-record time of 42.41 seconds, which was set earlier in the season at the Toledo Invitational.

Three Spartans also received All-Great Lakes Region recognition from the United Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), based on their performances during the season. Spartans receiving All-Region honors included sophomore Aidan DeSanto in the 1,500-meter run, sophomore Grant Mlack in the 400-meter hurdles and Wahner in the 200 meter dash.

Wahner finished tied for fifth in the Great Lakes Region and 80th in Division III with a school-record time of 21.93 seconds in the 200-meter dash, recorded at the Gator Invitational on May 13th.  DeSanto was fifth in the region and 67th in Division III with a 1,500-meter run time of 3:55.52, set at the All-Ohio Championships on April 16th

At the 2016 UAA Championships, hosted by Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, Mlack highlighted a group of six All-UAA honorees for the Spartans with a time of 53.85 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles that ranked third among Great Lakes competitors and 30th in Division III, claiming the UAA Championship in the event.  Mlack also earned All-UAA honors after placing second in the 110-meter hurdles with a mark of 15.46 seconds.

Junior Pat Shober added a UAA championship in the javelin throw with a distance of 55.37 meters on his first throw of the finals, a new career-best mark.   Senior Nicholas Heim finished third in the hammer throw at the meet with a toss of 47.88 meters on Saturday of the Championships.  Also earning All-UAA Certificates were Wahner, who finished third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.67 seconds, and Ajala, who placed third in the 100-meter dash, breaking the 11-second barrier for the first time in his career with a time of 10.99 seconds.  Wahner also claimed a fourth-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.48 seconds.

While at the outdoor UAA Championships, the 4x800-meter relay team of Joe Ledger, DeSanto, sophomore Nicholas Knorz and freshman Joseph Cabral broke the school record with a time of 7:53.00, besting the previous school record by .97 seconds and finishing fourth in the event.

In addition to their work on the track, the Spartans were recognized for their academic achievements, receiving All-Academic Honors by the USTFCCCA with a team grade point average of 3.45, the 12th-highest among recognized programs. Mlack claimed individual All-Academic honors for being ranked 30th in the 400-meter hurdles (53.85 seconds) and maintaining a GPA of at least 3.3. 26 members of the Case Western Reserve men's outdoor track and field team received Spring UAA All-Academic recognition.
