Two more school records fell for the Spartans on Friday afternoon, as Case Western Reserve University junior Nathaniel Wahner broke his own mark in the 200-meter dash, and sophomore Danielle Kulpins topped her program-best time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, over the course of a pair of meets.
Competing at the Gator Invitational, hosted by Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania, Wahner finished fifth in the 200-meter dash, becoming the first Spartan athlete ever to break the 22-second mark in the event with a time of 21.93. The time topped his previous school-record mark of 22.01 seconds, set earlier this season at the All-Ohio Championships.
Meanwhile, at the Dr. Keeler Invitational, hosted by North Central College in Naperville, Illinois, Kulpins finished ninth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a mark of 11:10.89, smashing her previous school-record time of 11:17.91 at the W&L Carnival earlier in the season. The time ranked as the 37th-fastest by a Division III competitor this season.
Two other Spartans were in action at the Dr. Keeler Invitational on Thursday. Senior Kristen Ruckstuhl finished third in the 10,000-meter run with a time 36:25.66, the 25th-fastest in Division III this season. In the 5,000-meter run, senior Kelsey Aamoth placed 10th with a time of 17:49.15.
At the Gator Invitational, freshman Olivia Newman recorded another personal-best time in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing third in a time of 1:03.18, the 27th-fastest in Division III this season. Sophomore Cassandra Laios paced the team in a pair of events, finishing seventh in both the discus throw (37.61 meters) and the shot put (11.21m), while junior Temi Omilabu was seventh in the hammer throw with a mark of 41.95 meters. Also in action on Friday was senior Emily Harker, who finished 12th in both the long jump (4.22 meters) and the shot put (9.37 meters).
For the men at the meet, sophomore Grant Mlack was the runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 54.53 seconds, while freshman Rasheed Ajala led the Spartans in the 100-meter dash with a 10th-place finish in a time of 11.10 seconds, just ahead of sophomores Zak Hurd (15th, 11.32 seconds) and Adrian Cannon (16th, 11.32 seconds). Cannon also placed ninth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.32 seconds.
In the throwing events at the meet, senior Nicholas Heim was 10th in the hammer throw with a mark of 46.18 meters, and junior Pat Shober was fourth in the javelin throw with a toss of 52.59 meters.
The Spartans will have one more chance to improve on their qualifying marks for the 2016 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships, when the team heads to the Great Lakes Elite Meet, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio on Thursday, May 19th.
