With just a week remaining before the 2016 University Athletic Association Championships, the Case Western Reserve University Track and Field Team appeared to be in top form on Saturday, with freshman Olivia Newman, junior Nathaniel Wahner and the Spartans' men's 4x100-meter relay team of senior Jonathan Freeman, sophomore Adrian Cannon, sophomore Zak Hurd and freshman Rasheed Ajala each setting program records at the All-Ohio Outdoor Championships in Delaware, Ohio.
Newman placed sixth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.17 seconds, breaking Lisa Encarnacion's 24-year old school record in the event of 58.69 seconds. She was also the team's top-finisher in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.24 seconds, placing 12th overall in the event.
Wahner earned All-Ohio honors with a third-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.01 seconds to best the previous school record of 22.05 seconds, set by Steve Ims during the 1987 season. Wahner added a scoring performance in the 400-meter dash, placing fifth with a time of 49.34 seconds.
Freeman, Cannon, Hurd and Ajala finished fifth in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 42.54 seconds. The mark was nearly half a second faster than the previous school-record time, set during the 1989 campaign.
Other Spartans earning All-Ohio honors for a top-three finish in an event at the meet included sophomore Aidan DeSanto in the men's 1,500-meter run, finishing third with a time of 3:55.52, junior Pat Shober in the men's javelin throw, finishing second with a distance of 54.57 meters, senior Kelsey Aamoth in the women's 1,500-meter run, finishing third with a time of 4:43.35, and senior Taylor O'Neil in the 800-meter run, finishing second with a time of 2:20.38.
Other scoring performances (top-eight finishes) for the CWRU men came from junior Bryan Kelly in the 10,000-meter run (seventh, 34:32.29), senior Nicholas Heim in the hammer throw (fourth, 48.52m), sophomore Andrew Ibibo in the 400-meter dash, (fourth, 49.27 seconds), freshman Joseph Cabral in the men's 800-meter run (seventh, 1:57.57) and the 4x400-meter relay team of Wahner, junior Nico Ericksen-Deriso, junior Perry Billett and Ibibo (seventh, 3:22.49).
Additional scoring performances for the Spartan women came from sophomore Cassandra Laios in the discus throw (fourth, 39.75 meters), and senior Christen Saccucci in the pole vault (eighth, 3.25m).
The Spartan men finished seventh out of 19 teams at the meet with 44 points, while the women placed 12th out of 19 teams with 22.5 points. Host Ohio Wesleyan won both the men's and women's portions of Saturday's meet.
The Spartans will now turn their attention to the 2016 UAA Championships, hosted by Washington University (Mo.) in St. Louis, Missouri next weekend. Action at the meet will begin on Saturday, April 23rd, and continue through Sunday, April 24th.
