Spartan Men & Women Each Finish Third at Marv Frye Invite

The Case Western Reserve University men's and women's track and field teams each turned in third-place finishes at the Marv Frye Invitational, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio on Sunday.

The men scored 104 points to finish third out of the nine teams at the meet.  Host Ohio Wesleyan won the competition with 191 points, while Heidelberg University placed second with 129.5 points.  In the women's portion of the meet, Case Western Reserve placed third with 104 points as well, finishing behind first-place Ohio Wesleyan (158 points) and second-place Ohio Northern (120.5 points).

The Spartan men tallied a pair of first-place finishes in the throwing events, with senior co-captain Nicholas Heim winning the hammer throw with a mark of 49.24 meters, the 43rd-best mark in Division III and the second-best in the University Athletic Association this season, while junior Pat Shober won the javelin throw with a mark of 52.43 meters in the event.  Sophomore Ryan DeMarinis was the team's top-performer in the other two throwing events, placing fifth in the discus throw with a mark of 38.28 meters (fifth-best in the UAA) and sixth in the shot put with a distance of 12.06 meters.

Junior co-captain Nathaniel Wahner was the team's top finisher in both the 100-meter dash, placing eighth with a time of 11.23 seconds, and the 400-meter hurdles, placing fourth with a mark of 58.10 seconds, the fourth-best time in the UAA this year.  Junior Nico Ericksen-Deriso added a seventh-place finish in the 400-meter dash (51.99 seconds) and a 13th-place finish in the 200-meter dash (23.05, fifth in the UAA), while freshman Ananth Suresh added a third-place finish in the triple jump (13.01 meters, third in the UAA) and a sixth-place finish in the long jump (6.29 meters).

In the men's vertical jumps, senior co-captain Jared Brucker cleared the bar at a height of 4.24 meters in the pole vault to tally the third-best mark in the UAA this season in the event and finish third overall at the meet, while senior Spencer Boyd placed eighth in the high jump with a height of 1.86 meters, fourth in the UAA this year.  Other top finishers for the Spartan men on Sunday included junior Galen Caldwell in the 1,500-meter run (third, 4:08.22), freshman Bennett Baier in the 110-meter hurdles (10th, 16.85 seconds), freshman Joseph Cabral in the 800-meter run (fifth, 2:00.40), and senior Benjamin Davis in the 5,000-meter run (fourth, 15:30.17).

The lone victory at the meet for the Spartan women came in the opening event, as sophomore Claire Plunkett won the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 12:39.29.  senior co-captain Taylor O'Neil placed second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:21.63, and the Spartans' 4x400-meter relay team of junior Abby Casalnova, sophomore Maria DeRenzo, O'Neil and freshman Olivia Newman finished as the runner-up in the event with a time of 4:08.51.

Newman added the top finishes by a Spartan in both the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.90 seconds (the sixth-fastest time ever by a Spartan) and the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:09.17, and freshman Shannon Carroll was the team's top placer in the javelin throw, finishing third with a mark of 31.65 meters (fourth in the UAA), and the 100-meter hurdles, finishing eighth with a time of 16.80 seconds.  Sophomore Cassandra Laios paced CWRU in the discus throw with a third-place finish, as her throw of 37.98 meters ranked as the second-best mark in the UAA, and in the shot put, where she finished third with a mark of 11.60 meters.

Other top finishers for the Spartan women included sophomore Danielle Kulpins in the 1,500-meter run (eighth, 5:03.29), Casalnova in the 400-meter dash (13th, 1:03.02), senior Kelsie Leary in the long jump (seventh, 4.45 meters) and 200-meter dash (20th, 27.67 seconds), freshman Amy Lin in the 5,000-meter run (fifth, 19:21.18), senior Laurel Shickler in the high jump (third, 1.53 meters) and sophomore Rachael Collins in the hammer throw (fifth, 40.13 meters).

The Spartans will be back in Delaware next weekend, competed at the 2016 Outdoor All-Ohio Championships on Saturday, April 16th.
