Spartan Men and Women Each Win Dick Small Invite

Behind a combined six first-place finishes, the Case Western Reserve University men and women each finished atop the team standings at the Dick Small Invitational, hosted by Defiance College in Defiance, Ohio on Saturday.

With 12 top-three finishes at the meet, the Spartan men topped the 13 teams in action with 167.5 points, finishing well ahead of second-place Albion (119.5 points) and third-place Northwood (110 points).  The women, who tallied 11 top-three finishes, placed first out of nine teams at the meet with 149 points, outpacing second-place Alma (123 points) and third-place Northwood (118 points).

Sophomore Grant Mlack led the Case Western Reserve men, winning the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 54.27 seconds, the second-fastest mark by a Division III competitor this season.  He added a second-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.44 seconds, the 15th-best mark in Division III.  Mlack also ran a leg on the Spartans' 4x400-meter relay team, finishing second with a time of 3:30.43 along with junior Nathaniel Wahner, sophomore Andrew Ibibo and junior Perry Billett.

Other first-place finishes for the Spartan men came from freshman Ben Resnick and junior Pat Shober.  Resnick picked up the win in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 16:19.67, and was followed in second place by senior Timothy Travitz with a mark of 16:30.37.  Shober earned his first-place finish in the javelin throw, registering a distance of 52.78 meters, the 20th-best mark in Division III for the campaign.

The CWRU men's 4x100-meter relay team of senior Jonathan Freeman, sophomore Adrian Cannon, sophomore Zak Hurd and freshman Rasheed Ajala finished second in a time of 43.22 seconds, the 28th-best time by a Division III relay during the campaign.  Ajala added a second-place finish in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.17 seconds, and a third-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a mark of 23.06 seconds.

Adding second-place finishes for the CWRU men on Saturday were Ibibo in the 400-meter dash (50.69 seconds) and sophomore Alex Nesvisky in the shot put (13.76 meters, 49th in DIII), while sophomore Ben Whitman in the steeplechase (10:22.57), Wahner in the 100-meter dash (11.22 seconds) and freshman David Prigg in the pole vault (3.60 meters) all added third-place finishes.  Other top performers for the Spartan men at the meet came from junior Bryan Kelly in the 10,000-meter run (fourth, 34:34.56), sophomore Nicholas Knorz in the 1,500-meter run (29th, 4:30.53), Billett in the long jump (ninth, 5.54 meters), junior Mitch Baller in the 800-meter run (sixth, 2:02.74), and senior Nicholas Heim in both the hammer throw (sixth, 46.85 meters, 21st in Division III) and the discus throw (eighth, 38.20 meters).

Winning events for the Spartan women on Saturday were freshman Olivia Newman, sophomore Cassandra Laios, and senior Emily Harker.  Newman finished first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.81 seconds, the 17th-fastest mark in Division III this season, and added a third-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.56 seconds, the 49th-fastest mark in Division III.  Harker picked up the win in the high jump, clearing the bar at 1.55 meters, and was second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.51 seconds.  Meanwhile, Laios won the shot put with a toss of 12.08 meters, 12th in Division III, and was also the team's top performer in the discus throw with a mark of 32.14 meters, placing sixth overall.

Second-place finishers for the CWRU women included senior Christen Saccucci in the pole vault with a mark of 3.12 meters (37th in DIII), sophomore Meredith Haller in the high jump with a height of 1.45 meters, sophomore Marie-Louise Kloster in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:11.95, and sophomore Rachel Willard in the triple jump with a distance of 10.05 meters.  Other third-place finishes came from senior Laurel Shickler in the high jump (1.45 meters) and freshman Sophie Trikeriotis in the 800-meter run (2:28.42).

Adding top performances by a Spartan during the meet were freshman Jennifer Hoffmann in the 1,500-meter run (sixth, 5:08.56), senior Meredith Shea in the javelin throw (fifth, 26.98 meters), senior Kelsie Leary in the 100-meter dash (sixth, 13.38 seconds) and the long jump (fifth, 4.58 meters), freshman Amy Lin in the 5,000-meter run (19:44.21) and sophomore Nimi Gupta in the hammer throw (sixth, 40.10 meters, 43rd in Division III).

The Spartans will return to competition next weekend, when the team travels to High Point, North Carolina for the VertKlasse Meeting, hosted by High Point University on Friday, April 1st and Saturday, April 2nd.
