Kulinski Breaks 25-Year Old Pole Vault Record, 4x200 Record Also Falls as Spartan Men Compete at Jim Wuske Invitational

ALLIANCE, Ohio – Senior captain Mark Kulinski (Oil City, Pa./Venango Catholic) broke a 25-year old school record in the pole vault as the Case Western Reserve University men's track & field team competed at the Jim Wuske Invitational hosted by the University of Mount Union on Saturday at the The McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.

Kulinski cleared the bar at 4.91 meters (16'01.75") to place first overall in the field. The previous CWRU indoor record in the event was set by two-time NCAA Champion decathlete Kevin Luthy in 1990 (4.72m). Kulinski's previous career best was 4.61m. 

Based on rankings compiled prior to competition on Saturday, Kulinski's mark ties for the sixth-best in the nation. 

The Spartans also set a second relay mark in as many weeks. Finishing second and breaking a 21-year old school record, the 4x200m relay team of junior Jonathan Freeman (Houston, Texas/Awty International School), sophomore Nathaniel Wahner (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby), senior Josh Malone (Berea, Ohio/Berea) and freshman Adrian Cannon (Lake View, N.Y./Frontier Central) finished with a time of 1:33.23.

Also on Saturday, freshman Aidan DeSanto (McCordsville, Ind./Cathedral) won the mile run, leading three Spartans in the top five in the event. DeSanto finished in 4:26.70, while sophomore Joe Ledger (New York, N.Y./Bronx Science) placed fourth and junior Gabe McLeod (Geneva, Ohio/Geneva) took fifth with times of 4:33.29 and 4:37.49, respectively.

CWRU also grabbed three spots in the 400m dash. Freeman and junior Devon Belew (Kansas City, Mo./Park Hill) finished fourth and fifth with respective times of 51.69 and 51.84. Freshman Grant Mlack (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon) finished 10th in 52.91.  

Freeman also finished seventh in the 200m dash with a time of 23.23.

Additionally on the track, junior Benjamin Davis (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) finished fourth in the 3,000m run crossing the line with a time of 9:06.31, and freshman Andrew Ibibo (Green Bay, Wis./Green Bay East) finished 10th with a time of 2:03.26 in the 800m run.

In field events, senior Garrett Gustafson (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon) and Malone were each able to clear the bar set at 1.78m to tie for ninth in the high jump. 

To end the meet, the 4x400m relay team of Freeman, Wahner, Belew and sophomore Nico Ericksen-Deris (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) took fourth by crossing the finish line in 3:31.89.

The Spartans are back in action at two different locations next weekend. Part of the squad will take part in the BW Mid-February Meet in Berea on Friday, February 13 (5:00 p.m.), while the team's top scorers will compete at the All-Ohio Championship in Westerville on Saturday, Feb. 14 (12:00 p.m.).
