DELAWARE, Ohio – Senior Ty Shaffer (Myersville, Md./Middletown Senior) established a school record and recorded a top-10 time nationally during the 400-meter hurdles to pace the Case Western Reserve University men's track & field team on Monday at the Ron Althoff Invitational at the George Gauthier Track.
Shaffer crossed the line ahead of five other competitors in a school-record time of 53.00 seconds, edging the University of Mount Union's Tyler Mettille by just .21 seconds. Shaffer's mark gives him the 10th-fastest in the event in all of NCAA Division III.
In field events, sophomore Harry Weintraub (Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) finished third in the hammer throw with a toss of 173 feet, while senior co-captain Eben Via (Evanston, Ill./Taylor Allderdice, Pa.) was fifth with a throw of 156'2".
Additionally, senior Michael Cohara (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) sits in third place in the decathlon following day one with 3,149 points. He finished fourth in the 100-meter dash (11.66 seconds, 719 points), fifth in the long jump (19'7", 580 points), first in the shot put (42'0", 655 points), fifth in the high jump (5'6.5", 536 points) and third in the 400-meter dash (53.54, 659 points).
The Spartan men will conclude the two-day Althoff Invitational on Tuesday. Events are scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m.
