DELAWARE, Ohio – All-American senior Matthew Jurcak (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/Olmsted Falls) won the 110-meter hurdles to lead the Case Western Reserve University men's track & field team to a fourth-place finish at the 2012 Marv Frye Invitational on Saturday, April 7 at Selby Field.
The Spartans totaled 100 points as a team, finishing behind host and team champion Ohio Wesleyan University (139), Heidelberg University (112) in second and Baldwin-Wallace College (107) in third. Muskingum University rounded out the top-five with 76.50 points.
Jurcak, the reigning University Athletic Association Men's Track & Field Athlete of the Week, placed first of 18 sprinters in the 110 hurdle event with a time of 14.73 seconds. The 2012 indoor All-American was the only competitor in the event to cross the line in under 15 seconds. Jurcak also placed third in the 400m hurdles with a mark of 54.44.
In the 800m run, junior Michael Perisa (Cortland, Ohio/Warren JFK) and senior Phil Yeung (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) placed third and fourth, respectively, with times of 1:57.38 and 1:58.69. Yeung then followed up with a runner-up performance in the 1,500m run in 4:02.01.
Junior Chris Kelly (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) also turned in a runner-up finish with a mark of 9:42.53 in the 3,000m steeplechase.
In field events, freshman Mark Kulinski (Oil City, Pa./Venango Catholic) and junior Nick Errico (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) went three-four in the pole vault with respective heights of 14 feet, five and one-half inches and 13'11.75."
The Spartans return to Selby Field next Saturday, April 14 for the annual All-Ohio Championship. Case's second-straight trip to Delaware will be the squad's final tune-up before the UAA Outdoor Championship on April 28-29 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
