NEW YORK, N.Y. – Senior sprinter Matthew Jurcak (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/Olmsted Falls) finished runner-up during the 60-meter hurdle competition as the Case Western Reserve University men's track & field team placed sixth at the 2012 University Athletic Association Indoor Championship hosted by New York University at the New Balance Track & Field Center.
Washington University-St. Louis claimed the team title with a strong second day and a combined 117 team points. Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.) and Emory University (Ga.) finished in a tie for second with 90 points, while the host Violets wound up fourth with 75. Rounding out the team scores were the University of Chicago (Ill.) with 60 for fifth, Case Western Reserve in sixth with 35 points and Brandeis University (Mass.) with 29 points for seventh.
During the preliminary round, Jurcak easily won his heat with a time of 8.31 seconds. During the finals, Jurcak met up with Washington's Tyler Jackson, who finished in 8.14 -- just ahead of Jurcak and his mark of 8.19. The fourth-year Spartan's time is tied for the eighth-fastest in all of NCAA Division III thus far this season.
Also of note, senior Jacob Miller (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Ignatius) advanced to the finals of the 60-meter hurdlesm crossing the line in sixth with a time of 8.99.
Case also recorded team points in the track portion of the meet from senior Ty Shaffer (Myersville, Md./Middletown Senior), who was runner-up in the 400m dash at 59.79. The 4x400m relay quartet of senior Jim Mather (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy), sophomore Michael Perisa (Cortland, Ohio/Warren JFK), senior Andrew Appelbaum (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) and sophomore Phil Yeung (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) crossed the line fifth in 3:29.88.
During field events, junior Nick Errico (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) picked up a third-place finish in the pole vault clearing the 13 feet, five and one-half inch mark, while freshman Mark Kulinski (Oil City, Pa./Venango Catholic) also cleared the bar at 13' 5.50" but finished sixth due to number of jumps needed to clear the height. Junior Cameron Lee (New Brighton, Minn./Irondale) and freshman Sam Reusser (Orrville, Ohio/Orrville) each notched fifth-place showings during the second day. Lee leapt through the air at 42' 11" in the triple jump and Reusser launched the shot put to a distance of 44' 2.75".
Jurcak will likely be invited to take part in the 2012 NCAA Division III Indoor Championship hosted by Grinnell College (Iowa) on March 10 and March 11. The NCAA will announce its participants in the coming weeks.
