NEW YORK, N.Y. – Senior thrower Eben Via (Evanston, Ill./Taylor Allderdice, Pa.) claimed the individual championship in the weight throw as the Case Western Reserve University men's track & field team ranks fifth after day one of the 2012 University Athletic Association Indoor Championship on Saturday at New Balance Track & Field Center.
The University of Chicago (Ill.) is atop the team standings with 36 points and is followed closely by Washington University-St. Louis in second with 32 points. Emory University (Ga.) and Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.) are tied for third with 31 points while Case rounds out the top-five with 12.
In the final event of day one, Via saved his best attempt for last as he improved his mark with each throw. Via's championship throw of 54 feet, four inches came on his fourth throw to notch 10 team points. In the same event, sophomore Harry Weintraub (Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) placed sixth with a toss of 49' 10."
The Spartans other team point came via the sixth-place distance medley quartet of sophomore Phil Yeung (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair), senior Ty Shaffer (Myersville, Md./Middletown Senior), sophomore Michael Perisa (Cortland, Ohio/Warren JFK) and junior Chris Kelly (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg). The Spartan team stopped the clock in 10:23.75.
The Spartans will conclude the UAA Indoor Championships on Sunday, February 26. The first event is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.
