MEADVILLE, Pa. - Select members of the Case Western Reserve University men's and women's track & field teams competed at the fifth annual Gator Invitational hosted by Allegheny College on Friday, May 13 at Frank B. Fuhrer Field. For the women, junior Erin Hollinger (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon) hit an NCAA automatic qualifying mark in the high jump. On the men's side, senior Ty Shaffer (Myersville, Md./Middletown Senior) bettered his provisional mark in the 400-meter hurdles.
Hollinger defeated 12 competitors in the high jump with a stadium-record mark of five feet, eight inches. A 2009 All-American in the event, Hollinger will now compete at the 2011 NCAA Division III Championship Meet hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University on May 26-28 in Delaware.
Shaffer followed up his victory at the University Athletic Association Championship with a first-place showing in the 400-meter hurdles with a stadium-record time of 53.13 seconds -- defeating 16 other sprinters in the race.
Also for the women, freshman Brooke Simpson (Solon, Ohio/Solon) was runner-up in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 11:44.89. Sophomore Alyssa Harker (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) was sixth in the 400m hurdles at 1:07.29. Junior thrower Amanda Kline (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster) finished sixth in the shot put at 38-04.00, sixth in the discus at 133-01 and seventh in the hammer at 149-11. Sophomore Jenna Pansky (Parma, Ohio/Beaumont) came in seventh in the triple jump at 35-10.00.
For the men, junior Matt Jurcak (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/Olmsted Falls) placed second in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.96.
Senior Jeremy Gdaniec (Erie, Pa./ McDowell) was sixth in the hammer throw at 165-04 and freshman Harry Weintraub (Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) was seventh at 158-05.
