LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Case Western Reserve University track & field teams opened the outdoor portion of their 2011 season at the Virginia Military Institute/Washington & Lee Carnival on Friday and Saturday, March 25-26. The Spartan men and women combined for 45 top-10 finishes, five event wins and two meet records, while senior Justine Jeroski (Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional) and junior Amanda Kline (Lancaster, OH/Lancaster) landed NCAA qualifying marks for the women.
For the women on day one, Jeroski defeated 29 competitors in the 5,000m run with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 17:25.87. Sophomore Corin Bowen (Midland, MI/Bullock Creek) was sixth in the race with a mark of 18:33.50 and classmate Thea Emmons (St. Louis, MO/Parkway North) was 10th in 19:11.39.
Kline won the discus throw with an NCAA provisional toss of 140 feet, five inches.
Senior Cindy Spahn (Wildwood, MO/W.T. Woodson) placed second of 39 competitors in the 1,500m run with a time of 4:49.75. Freshman Brooke Simpson (Solon, OH/Solon) also finished in the top 10 in the race with a sixth-place time of 4:57.55.
Sophomore Emily Tran (Beaverton, OR/Southridge) was fourth in the javelin throw with a mark of 113-04. Kline also finished 10th at 82-11.
Sophomore Valoryn Whitelock (Lexington, OH/Lexington) placed eighth in the long jump with a mark of 15-8.25.
For the men on day one, sophomore Chris Kelly (Twinsburg, OH/Twinsburg) was second of 51 runners in the 5,000m with a time of 14:53.37. Senior David Carter (Wadsworth, OH/Wadsworth Senior) finished seventh in the 10,000m in 31:53.75 and sophomore Ben Yavitt (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) was eighth in the 3,000m steeplechase in 10:07.07.
In the pole vault, sophomores Nick Errico (Londonberry, NH/Londonberry) and Arjun Sharma (Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista) placed ninth and 10th, respectively, with marks of 12-05.50.
Sophomore Izzy Budnick (Reistertown, MD/McDonogh) was ninth in the discus with a throw of 111-07.
On day two for the women, junior Leslie Stanard (Maple Heights, OH/Maple Heights) won the 100m dash in 12.76 seconds. Junior Samantha Friedman (Beachwood, OH/Beachwood) was fourth in the event with a time of 13.17 and junior Nataija Brown (Cleveland, OH/Glenville) was ninth in 13.33.
Stanard also finished runner-up in the 200m with a time of 26.89 while Gavriella Pora was sixth in 27.62. Pora also placed fifth in the 400m in 62.09.
Three Spartans placed in the top six in the 800m run. Senior Bettina Kaphingst (Lewiston, NY/Lewiston-Porter) was third in 2:20.62, Simpson was fifth in 2:21.76 and Spahn was sixth in 2:23.51.
Whitelock and junior Erin Hollinger (Chardon, OH/Chardon) were second and third, respectively, in the 100m hurdles with times of 15.84 and 15.96. Whitelock also crossed the line fifth in the 400m hurdles and was followed by sophomore Alyssa Harker (Mentor, OH/Mentor) in sixth place at 70.36.
The Spartans' 4x100m relay team placed first as the team of freshman Thenessa Savitsky (Frackville, PA/North Schuykill), Friedman, Pora and Stanard finished in 50.80. The 4x800m team of Kaphingst, Simpson, Spahn and freshman Kaitlin Fanning (Canton, NY/Hugh C. William) also won with a time of 9:45.50.
In the high jump, Hollinger was runner-up with a mark of 5-03.75. Sophomore Jenna Pansky (Parma, OH/Beaumont) was fourth at 4-11.75 and Whitelock tied for seventh at 4-07.75.
Sophomore Clara Fitzpatrick (Ionia, MI/Ionia) placed eighth in the pole vault with a height of 8-06.25.
Whitelock and Pansky were eighth and 10th, respectively, in the long jump with distances of 15-08.25 and 15-07.00.
Savitsky placed fourth in the triple jump at 34-09.00.
In the shot put, Kline followed up with her second event win of the weekend, posting a meet record mark of 41-05.75. She also placed runner-up in the hammer throw at 151-00.
For the men on day two, Matt Jurcak (Olmsted Falls, OH/Olmsted Falls) won the 110m hurdles in a meet record 15.16 seconds. Junior Jacob Miller (North Royalton, OH/St. Ignatius) was third in the event in 15.96.
Jurcak was also third in the 400 hurdles in 57.41 and senior Erik Williams (Detroit, MI/Detroit County Day) was ninth in the 100m dash in 11.40.
In the hammer throw, freshman Harry Weintraub (Croton-on-Hudson, NY/Hendrick Hudson) was runner-up in the hammer throw with a mark of 170-03 and senior Eben Via (Evanston, IL/Taylor Allerdice) placed 10th at 128-03.
The Spartans are back in action next Saturday, April 2 at the DePauw University (IN) Invitational. Events begin at 11:30 a.m.
