CHICAGO, Ill. – The Case Western Reserve University men's and women's track & field teams wrapped up action at the 2011 University Athletic Association Indoor Championship on Sunday, February 27. The Spartan women were fourth, tying their outdoor finish from a year ago as the best in school history. The Spartan men were seventh.
Emory University (GA) won the team title on the women's side with 119.50 points and was followed by Washington University (MO) with 109.50, host University of Chicago at 99.50 and Case Western Reserve with 55.
For the Spartans, junior Erin Hollinger (Chardon, OH/Chardon) won the high jump in her first track & field competition of the season with a mark of 1.63 meters. Hollinger just completed her season with the Spartan women's basketball team yesterday.
Senior Justine Jeroski (Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional) followed up her runner-up finish in the 5,000-meter run yesterday with a second-place showing in the 3,000m. Jeroski finished the race in a season-best 10:10.67.
After placing sixth in the weight throw on day one, sophomore Emily Tran (Beaverton, OR/Southridge) finished fifth in the shot put with a throw of 10.42 meters.
Junior Leslie Stanard (Maple Heights, OH/Maple Heights) placed fifth in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.53 seconds and sixth in the 200m in 27.34. Classmate Nataija Brown (Cleveland, OH/Glenville) scored sixth in the 55m hurdles in 9.66 seconds.
On the men's side, Washington claimed the title with 161 points, while Chicago was second with 100.
For the Spartans, sophomore Chris Kelly (Twinsburg, OH/Twinsburg) finished third in the mile run at 4:20.48. Senior Mark Grogan (Coraopolis, PA/Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) also took third in the 3,000m with a season-best mark of 8:46.15.
Junior Matt Jurcak (Olmsted Falls, OH/Olmsted Falls) was third in the 55m hurdles with a time of 7.85 seconds and junior Ty Shaffer (Myersville, MD/Middletown Senior) placed fourth in the 400m dash with a season-best time of 51.28. Sophomore Nick Errico (Londonberry, NH/Londonberry) also finished fifth in the pole vault at 3.93 meters.
The outdoor season begins for Case Western Reserve on March 25-26 at the Virginia Military Institute/Washington & Lee Track Carnival.
